ISI plot to trigger anti-India riots foiled Saurabh Shukla Kathmandu, June 16 THANKS TO a tip-off received by the Nepalese authorities on Tuesday, anti-India riots planned by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) were averted in the nick of time. The government conducted a major crackdown and arrested a former Nepal minister, along with some of his associates. The ex-minister is a key ISI operative. In the aftermath of the palace massacre, the ISI's opening gambit was a massive disinformation campaign. Pakistani newspapers like News and Jang carried articles alleging an Indian role in the Palace massacre. According to sources, the ISI got them photocopied and widely circulated in the city. As if on cue, similar articles began appearing in some Nepalese newspapers as well. A mere coincidence? Not at all, claim sources, and point to a recent meeting between Major Majid, the ISI's field coordinator in Kathmandu, and three editors of Nepalese vernacular papers. The disinformation campaign was expected to provide a launching pad for anti-India riots, timed to take place when the inquiry commission made its report public. But the former minister�s arrest forced the plan to be put on hold. Sources say the ISI could now strike after the Maoists release their own probe report on the killings sometime later next week. Indeed, Nepal continues to be a hub for the ISI's anti-India activities. For instance, the man who hired two hitmen to kill Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal is Jain aka Jainuddin, an assistant working in Pakistan's embassy here. In fact, a number of fresh ISI recruits have recently arrived in Nepal from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
