ADMIRAL DOENITZ in the last week of APRIL 1945 had TWO U-BOATS
PAINTED with the NUMBERS of U-530. One U-BOAT U-530 was
left docked in the SUBMARINE LOCKS at KIEL on the BALTIC SEA.
The OTHER U-530 commanded by CAPTAIN WILHELM BARNHART
took on board 15 PASSENGERS with their faces wrapped in surgical
gauze and were taken to a private section of the U-BOAT unavailable
to the other crew members.
The U-530 under command of CAPTAIN BARNHART then proceeded
north to refuel in NORWAY. After refueling the U-530 then set a
course NORTHWEST to a position half way between the SHETLAND
and the FAEROE ISLANDS. From this position the U-530 then
headed south where the U-530 then linked up near the ISLAND of
ST. HELENA with another U-BOAT the U-465. By this time
the WAR was OVER and ADMIRAL DOENITZ had ORDERED ALL
U-BOATS to CEASE HOSTILITIES and turn themselves in to the ALLIES.
NEVERTHELESS . The U-530 continued south. The U-530 then linked
up with another U-BOAT approximately 500 miles north of the area
of ANTARCTICA known as QUEEN MAUD LAND. The WAR was
WAY OVER by this time.
Then the U-530 turned NORTHWEST and headed for ARGENTINA. On
JULY the 29th 1945 the U-530 turned itself in to ARGENTINIAN port
authorities at the PORT of MAR DEL PLATA.
The WORLD PRESS WENT ABSOLUTELY CRAZY.
The OSS & US NAVY sent special investigatory teams to MAR DEL PLATA
immediately. The U-530 crew was INTERROGATED for three weeks.
Then the US NAVY TOWED both U-530's ( the one from KIEL and the
one from MAR DEL PLATA ) to a spot near the ISLAND of CUBA. The
U-530 from KIEL was BLOWN UP and SUNK.
The other U-530 ( the one commanded by CAPTAIN BARHNART ) was
TOWED THROUGH the PANAMA CANAL and taken to a NAVAL
BASE in BREMMERTON WASHINGTON. Where it was DISASSEMBLED
PIECE by PIECE.
