A Bigger Rip-Off than Enron?

by Charles Hardin, President
While the liberals, both on Capitol Hill and in the media are madly trying to make a Whitewater type case against President Bush and his administration for affiliating with the Enron executives who supposedly ruined the retirement security of their employees, nobody seems to notice that the rhetoric is coming from the same spendthrift politicians who have, for years, spent money out from under their Social Security constituents.

Investors Business Daily (IBD) sees through the partisan political rhetoric and asks, in an editorial, Where is the indignation about theft from another retirement program? From the beginning, Congress has forced workers to hand over a substantial portion of their earnings to Social Security, kept them from touching it (much less investing it), then handed it back.

IBD continues, Workers born after 1973 can expect, at most, the princely return of 3.7% on their investment." The same workers could get three times that if they were allowed to invest these funds in the private sector. The thievery doesnt stop there. Lawmakers have taken future retirees money - in the form of Social Security surpluses - and spent it on government programs to buy votes and thus stay in power.

IBD gets it right when it calls the theft of Trust Fund money, legalized larceny.

Undoubtedly, the liberal politicians will use the demise of Enron as a wedge against our efforts to allow workers the opportunity to save a portion of their Social Security taxes in a personal retirement account even though the Social Security Trust Fund, as IDB puts it, will bleed 100 times the amount of red ink as Enrons.

Were glad Investors Business Daily got it right. We must all remind the liberal politicians and their cohorts in the media that Americans will not stand for their self-righteous indignation. The only way to secure a retirement future for all Americans is to give them opportunity to control what retirement holds for them. The unfortunate employees of Enron did not have that control and neither they nor the rest of Americans should be allowed to become poster children for the liberal agenda of government control of everyday life.

Finally, a Candidate worth going to the Poll and Vote For!
