Schizophrenia linked to childhood sexual abuse - 1/16/02 - By Simon Collins Schizophrenia has been linked to childhood sexual abuse by a groundbreaking study led by Auckland researchers. The psychologists' research, published in an American medical journal, has found that 50 per cent of female psychiatric inpatients surveyed in 15 international studies said they were sexually abused as girls. It says women in psychiatric hospitals are at least twice as likely as other women to have been abused...."That doesn't prove that schizophrenia is caused by child abuse," said the principal researcher, Auckland University clinical psychologist John Read....In 20 years of clinical experience before he took up a senior lectureship at Auckland seven years ago, Dr Read found that almost every patient could identify traumas that caused his or her schizophrenia. Apart from child abuse, common traumas included losing parents and relationship breakups. Some became distressed by social trauma. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/storydisplay.cfm?storyID=636724&thesection=news&thes ubsection=general The Contribution of Early Traumatic Events to Schizophrenia in Some Patients: A Traumagenic Neurodevelopmental Model Author(s): John Read; Bruce D. "THE current diathesis-stress model of schizophrenia proposes that a genetic deficit creates a predisposing vulnerability in the form of oversenstivity to stress. This model positions all psychosocial events on the stress side of the diathesis-stress equation. As an example of hypotheses that emerge when consideration is given to repositioning adverse life events as potential contributors to the diathesis, this article examines one possible explanation for the high prevalence of child abuse found in adults diagnosed schizophrenic. A traumagenic neurodevelopmental (TN) model of schizophrenia is presented, documenting the similarities between the effects of traumatic events on the developing brain and the biological abnormalities found in persons diagnosed with schizophrenia, including overreactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis; dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin abnormalities; and structural changes to the brain such as hippocampal damage, cerebral atrophy, ventricular enlargement, and reversed cerebral asymmetry." http://www.guilford.com, 72 Spring Street, New York, NY 10012, tel: (800) 365-7006, or (212) 431-9800, fax: (212) 966-6708, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Childhood abuse 'may trigger schizophrenia' - Childhood abuse may help trigger schizophrenia in later life, according to controversial new evidence. Having worked inside government systems I've seen the lack of resources allotted to adequately investigate, let alone alleviate child abuse at it's most simplistic level - physical, emotional, sexual abuse and neglect. Meanwhile, even more trouble for our former-Texas-oil-man-turned-President is brewing with reports that unveil UNOCAL, another big energy company, for being in bed with the Taliban, along with the U.S. government in a major, continuing effort to construct pipelines through Afghanistan from the petroleum-rich Caspian Basin in Central Asia. Beneath their burkas, UNOCAL is being exposed for giving the five star treatment to Taliban Mullahs in the Lone Star State in 1997. The "evil-ones" were also invited to meet with U.S. government officials in Washington, D.C. According to a December 17, 1997 article in the British paper, The Telegraph, headlined, "Oil barons court Taliban in Texas," the Taliban was about to sign a "2 billion contract with an American oil company to build a pipeline across the war-torn country. ... The Islamic warriors appear to have been persuaded to close the deal, not through delicate negotiation but by old-fashioned Texan hospitality. ... JOSEF HEBERT, Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON (AP) - The timing of an accounting firm's memo directing the destruction of documents raises the serious possibility of obstruction of justice, says the chairman of a Senate committee investigating Enron Corp.'s collapse. Sen. Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., said Sunday he was troubled that a lawyer at Arthur Andersen & Co., Enron's accounting firm directed the destruction of Enron documents. The memo from a lawyer was dated Oct. 12, 2001, when Andersen and executives of the energy giant ``knew that Enron was in real trouble and the roof was about to collapse on them,'' Lieberman said.... Enron filed for bankruptcy Dec. 2. By then its stock had plummeted from about $83 a share a year earlier to less than $1 a share. In recent years many Enron executives sold their stock, though some continued to hold large amounts, worth about $1.1 billion. Other Enron employees were barred from selling stock in their 401(k) retirement fund as the company's problems became more serious.... Lieberman said that so far there is no evidence that the Bush administration ``was somehow involved in wrongdoing in the collapse of Enron.'' http://www.economist.com/agenda/displayStory.cfm?story_id=938154 Bush and Enron's collapse Jan 11th 2002 >From The Economist Global Agenda A wave of controversy stirred up by the collapse of America's energy giant, Enron, has washed up at the front door of the White House. Amid a series of potentially embarrassing revelations, the Bush administration faces a new test O'Neill and Bush: Who told whom what? BIG COMPANIES never go bust without causing some collateral damage. But the collapse of America's Enron, the world's biggest energy-trading company, is proving to be spectacularly destructive by any standards. Impoverished shareholders and employees were already outraged by the behaviour of the firm's top executives, many of whom seem to have cashed in their own shares before the collapse. But the many links between Enron's top executives and the Bush administration always looked as if it might cause even more trouble. On Thursday January 10th, the day following the announcement that America's Justice Department had opened a criminal investigation into Enron's collapse, the storm broke. President George Bush and his aides spent Thursday frantically trying to distance themselves from the firm as new revelations poured out. Unless the Bush administration can quickly control the proliferating questions about Enron's collapse, they could grow into a scandal that overshadows the rest of Mr Bush's presidency. That may not happen, but this week it looked ominously like a real possibility.... The problem for Mr Bush is that the ties between the company and his administration were especially intricate and close. Mr Lay has been a supporter of Mr Bush ever since the president's unsuccessful campaign for Congress in 1978, and has been known as a close personal friend of Mr Bush and his family. At one stage, Mr Lay was mooted as a possible energy secretary under Mr Bush. TUESDAY JANUARY 15 2002 Straw protests over al-Qaeda prisoners BY TOM BALDWIN, MELISSA KITE AND ROLAND WATSON The Times BRITAIN has protested to the US about the treatment of al-Qaeda prisoners and sought assurances that they will be treated in accordance with international norms.... The 20 prisoners, including one Briton, were hooded and shackled during a 27-hour flight from Afghanistan and are being held in 8ft x 6ft cages that are open to the elements. Six more British Muslims will join them soon and another planeload of suspects left Afghanistan for Cuba last night. Yesterday the Pentagon announced that Red Cross inspectors would be admitted to Guantanamo Bay this week. Officials insisted that they had nothing to hide, and that the prisoners were being treated properly. Each was receiving three culturally appropriate meals a day and could exercise and shower daily. The Foreign Office said that Mr Straw had held a frank discussion with General Powell, adding: He has assured us that prisoners will be treated humanely in accordance with international norms..... Hooding of prisoners is outlawed in Britain and there is also concern about the prospect of some of the prisoners facing the death penalty. The US has declared the al-Qaeda prisoners to be unlawful combatants and therefore not entitled to be treated as prisoners of war under the Geneva Convention. Their interrogation in Cuba leaves them in legal limbo as they are outside the juristriction of American courts. The Pentagon says extreme precautions are justified. You are talking about people who are incredibly dangerous, who are willing to blow themselves up and do anything possible to hurt or kill others. www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
