Files on ultras may be gutted in Pak fire

Agencies
(Islamabad, January 16)

A 16-storey government building believed to contain records of
recently-banned terrorist organisations and firearms licences, was
almost completely gutted in a fire on Tuesday.

Authorities said the fire, which started on the upper floors, was
apparently caused by a short circuit, but they did not rule out other
causes.

The Shaheed-i-Millat building housed 15 government departments,
including the record-keeping offices of the Pakistan Interior
Ministry.

The fire broke out around 6.25 p.m. local time, more than three hours after the
offices closed for the day. The fire raged for over five hours and completely
destroyed more than 10 floors.

"The building is almost completely gutted. There are still some fires that have not
been put out," Islamabad police chief Masir Khan Burrani said on Wednesday.

"We believe the fire was caused by short-circuiting but we are following all aspects
for investigation," he said, referring to speculation that it was deliberately lit in
retaliation to the recent arrests of alleged Islam
ic extremists.

The Pakistan Government, however, said on Wednesday that no confidential records
relating to the banned militant outfits were lost in the fire. Reacting to reports
that a large number of files on the five banned outfits w
ere lost in the fire, a government spokesman said only some old records of the
Interior Ministry were lost. He said there had been no confidential records of
religious and Jehadi organisations or of the Taliban in the bui
lding.

The Shaheed-e-Millat Secretariat housed offices of 21 ministries, government
departments, including offices of the Interior Ministry and the main offices of
Pakistan's Intelligence Bureau.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, five Pakistani security personnel were injured in a shooting
by two unidentified gunmen at Lahore airport. The attackers arrived at the main gate
of the Lahore airport and opened fire at the secur
ity personnel. They, however, managed to escape after firing several rounds.

This is the second time in recent months that Pakistani government records have been
destroyed in a fire. Last October, the records room at the Pakistan Army headquarters
in Rawalpindi was gutted. Then too, the cause was
said to be a short-circuit.

CRUCIAL POINTS

What did the building house?

Government offices. The 16th storey, where the fire started, housed offices of the
Interior Ministry.

What could have been lost?

Records of militant groups, including the ones that were recently banned, and
documents on gun licences issued by the ministry.

Is this sabotage?

Authorities say fire was caused by a short-circuit but arent ruling out other causes.
Another mysterious fire in the record room of the Pak Army HQ in Rawalpindi last
October was said to have been caused by a short-circu
it.
