We stopped in the capital of Iowa, and I bought a paper. I knew that Iowa was really the "heartland," and that family values would be everywhere. Imagine my surprise when I looked at the classified ads. Apparently Des Moines has unusual family values. There was column after column advertising massage parlors. The names led me to believe that I would not have considered them therapeutic for me. In Idaho I was treated to some guy telling the waitress (obviously a friend) about the porn flicks he had seen the night before and how he got bored with all that and left the party. In Indiana I watched some guy steal the tip left to a waitress who was a friend of the guy and his date. It was only a buck, but the people at the table had been a man, wife and three very messy kids. I thought he took it as a joke, but he and his date left and left with the buck.
