THE SOUND OF THE SHOFAR IS LOUD
BUT SILENCE IS LOUDER
Anti-Semitic polemicists often selectively pick from history
whatever would best support their premise. This was done with
profusion by Palestinians and even some well-meaning types who
find every excuse to support the seemingly vulnerable "underdog,"
even though the under-dog's bite is lethal. To hear them speak
you would think that the notion of terrorism has been the
exclusive domain of the State of Israel and *ALL* the Jews who
live there. Ironically, they don't distinguish from among those
Jews, good Jews and bad Jews.
But, all Jews, who live in Israel, are the same to the
Palestinians, and their supporters and to the anti-Semites who
play with political correctness to deny there is anti-Semitism
against the Jews.
They always fail to mention Arab rioting and massacres of Jews in
Israel, i.e. the many massacres in Hebron and the slaughter of 77
doctors and nurses on the road to Mt Scopus prior to Israel's
independence from British and Arab aggressions.. They fail to
mention the blowing up of children in buses and bombs going off
in the middle of busy maketplaces and children losing their
fingers to hollowed out coins which Palestinian terrorists filled
with plastic eplosives, etc. The list of their atrocities are too
long and numerous to list.
I supported Palestinian self-determination in the territories,
but there was always the question of Palestinian integrity. The
territorial issue has always been a smokescreen. It would be
naive to assume that the real intention of the PLO or their other
proxies in Hamas, Hizbellah, Jihad, etc. is anything other than
the total liquidation of Israel. That part of their rhetoric has
never been repudiated. If there is a two state solution, and even
greater autonomy, the autonomous territories would still be a
base for aggression against Israel.
A Muslim state would not be fair to non-Muslims, nor can a Jewish
state be completely fair to non-Jews, nor can a country where
most of it's inhabitants are Christian be completely fair to non-
Christians. The bias and view always favors Christian views.
But, Israel must remain a "Jewish State" and most of our
Presidents and most politicians recognize that fact even as some
Arabists lobby for an alternative position.
But, would the alternative be practical, even possible?
An Israeli solder once said to me: "The shofar [a trumpet made from
a ram's horn which is blown during the Jewish high holy days] is
loud, but silence is louder."
For thousands of years the Jews have been forcibly expelled from
one country after another. After Mesada, the city of Jerusalem
was destroyed and the land tilled under with salt so that nothing
would grow there. The Jewish nation was banished and became a
People without a country, destined to wonder from one place to
another; scorned, emasculated and humiliated. Jews were murdered
during the Crusades, thousands beheaded; burned at the stake
during the Inquisition; butchered by the Cossacks; accused of
causing the Black Plague and other infamous crimes, the "Blood
Libel", etc. There were pogroms after pogroms and Jews with their
ephemeral existence everywhere were only allowed to live and to
survive for a few centuries at a time and then they were
butchered and expelled again --- skinned alive and hung on hooks
in slaughterhouses, processed into soap, glue, and fertilizer,
victims of heinous medical experiments, [and the skin of some
were purportedly made into lampshades by sadistic Christians],
and they were cremated by the millions during the Holocaust.
Not even allowed to take refuge in the United States during the
Second World War, but sent back to die in the crematoriums.
Israel became the only refuge for oppressed Jews. Existence
everywhere has always been ephemeral. And, one only needs to read
Jewish history to realize that history does indeed repeat itself
over and over again, where Jews are concerned. To believe
otherwise is to live a false dream in a golden ghetto.
So while Zionism may be exclusionary, it is the only option. The
other so-called realistic view of relying on the good will of our
fellow men [and women] is the alternative choice which already
cost millions of lives. We do not harbor malice towards the
Palestinians. Indeed, we seek cooperation and understanding with
the Arab Peoples and their national liberation movements -- but,
not at the expense of Israel.
Zionism does discriminate because it is for Jews (though we have
also taken in a lot of non-Jews, simply because they were being
oppressed elsewhere) But, in light of history and persecution of
the Jews how could it not be "specifically" a Jewish Liberation
Movement?
When Jews formed the Jewish Brigade in the Second World War to
fight Hitler and fascism while the Arabs supported Hitler, that
was Zionism. When Jews fought against British colonialism in
"Palestine," that was Zionism.
