ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) Passengers and their bags will be scanned, sniffed and otherwise scrutinized at Orlando International Airport, in a test of emerging security devices meant to stop airplane attacks.

The National Safe Skies Alliance will install five new machines at a security checkpoint in February to see if they can be implemented at other U.S. airports.

The new devices scan passengers' bodies, clothing and carryon bags.

One seeks explosives residue. Another can spot other hazardous materials. Another pinpoints metal items. There is an X-ray body scanner that can see through clothes, and a three-dimensional X-ray bag scanner.

"We're trying to see how best to deploy these devices nationwide," said John Whittenburg, executive vice president of the Alliance, a nonprofit testing group funded by the federal government.

Airlines whose passengers will be asked to volunteer for scanning include Delta, Virgin Atlantic, Swissair and British Airways.

Orlando International was chosen because of the large numbers of domestic and international visitors it handles and because it has participated in past tests, said airport security director Brigitte Craig.

The new devices have not yet been used for aviation security purposes. Some have been tested only in laboratories, Whittenburg said.

The explosives detector for carryon bags sends out low-level radio waves to analyze a bag for molecules of explosive compounds.

The walkthrough hazardous materials detector uses a vacuum to suck up the air and analyze it for traces of explosives and other hazardous materials.

The body scanner, expected to be the most controversial of the five, subjects a passenger to low-level X-rays that penetrate clothing.

The advanced metal detector uses a camera to create a computer image of metal objects in their exact locations on a passenger's body.

The advanced X-ray device shoots radiation from two sources, giving security personnel a three-dimensional image of a bag's contents.
