:: HAS ARAFAT CROSSED THE LINE? In the past few weeks the United States has
changed its stance regarding PLO leader Yasir Arafat and the Palestinian
Authority [PA/PLO]. Just a few short months ago, in November 2001, US
President George W. Bush addressed the United Nations and voiced support
for the establishment of a Palestinian state. The same week US Secretary of
State Colin Powell stated that Arafat was doing his best to end the
violence. Since that time 62 Israelis have been murdered by members of the
PA/PLO, Fatah, Tanzim, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, the Al-Aksa Martyrs Brigades,
and Hizb'Allah terrorist organizations. In addition, Israel seized the
freighter Karine A in the Red Sea carrying 50 tons of weaponry bound for
PA/PLO-occupied territories. Bush has sent letters to Egyptian President
Hosni Mubarak, Jordan's King Abdullah II, and Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah.
The letters outlined how seriously the US views the Karine A affair and
PA/PLO complicity in the smuggling attempt. The White House has since
backed the Israeli government's decision to keep Arafat in Ram'Allah. US
State Department spokesman Richard Boucher described the confinement of
Arafat as an act of "self-defense." A US official told THE JERUSALEM POST
the Al-Aksa Martyrs Brigades would soon be added to the State Department
list of foreign terrorist organizations. The group was established in
September 2000, the beginning of the current Oslo War, by members of the
Arafat-led Fatah terrorist organization, who have been active in the
Intifada since its beginnings in 1987. In addition to shootings and
road-side bombings, it has acknowledged coordinating with Hamas's Izzadin
al-Kassim military wing and with members of the military wing of Islamic
Jihad.

Meanwhile, Arab diplomatic sources said not one Arab leader has telephoned
Arafat over the last five weeks since Israeli restrictions have trapped him
in his headquarters in the West Bank city of Ram'Allah. The sources said
the apparent boycott involves heads of state including Egyptian President
Hosni Mubarak and Jordan's King Abdullah. Palestinian diplomats, including
the Palestinian envoy to the Arab League, Mohammed Sbeih, have confirmed
the boycott on Arafat, Middle East Newsline reported. A London-based,
Palestinian-owned daily quoted a PA/PLO official as saying that Mubarak has
not been in direct contact with Arafat for one month. Mubarak, Arab
diplomatic sources said, was angered by the Palestinian attempt to smuggle
a ship full of Iranian weapons through the Suez Canal, owned by Egypt. The
sources said the United States presented evidence to Cairo that PA/PLO
officials bribed Egyptian customs officers to allow the Karine-A through
the canal. Washington, the sources said, has also sent the evidence of
Palestinian involvement to Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

In a related story, Arafat sent a personal emissary to Iraqi dictator
Saddam Hussein asking for help. The story was reported on the Voice of
Palestine's news broadcasts on Thursday. Iraq's leader, the Voice of
Palestine noted, "said the Iraqi people was one with the Palestinian people
and its Leadership in its steadfast struggle against Israeli aggression."
Arafat and the PA/PLO have a history of supporting Saddam and of getting
support in return. During the Gulf War, Arafat supported Saddam against the
American-led coalition. The man Arafat recently appointed as the PA/PLO
representative in Jerusalem, Dr. Sari Nusseibeh, was arrested during the
Gulf War for contacting Iraqi officials and offering them advice on how to
make Iraq's SCUD missile attacks on Israel "more effective."

:: ARAFAT CALLS FOR MORE US INVOLVMENT: Yasser Arafat called on the United
States to do more to promote Middle East peace on Saturday after President
Bush harshly criticized the Palestinian president and suspended a
cease-fire mission. Arafat declined to comment directly on Bush's remark
that he was "very disappointed" with the Palestinian president's efforts to
end 16 months of conflict with Israel. Bush discussed options with his
foreign policy aides on Friday on punitive measures against the PA/PLO and
suspended a visit to the region by peace envoy Anthony Zinni. The US
intends to keep up the verbal pressure on Arafat and there is an impression
in the diplomatic community in Washington that "Arafat is safe for now," as
one Arab diplomat put it.

Meanwhile, from Ram'Allah, a top adviser, Nabil Abu Rdeneh, threatened the
US that cutting ties with the PA/PLO would "cause an earthquake in the
region that no one will be able to stop." The Palestinian threat raised the
already spiraling war tension in the region another notch. It is a
Palestinian declaration of war -- not just against Israel, but against the
US. Arafat moreover has told the US government that he is capable of
plunging the entire region into his showdown with America.

:: MORE ATTACKS: A lone terrorist opened fire on passersby at a downtown
Jerusalem intersection Tuesday, killing two persons and wounding some 40
people others. Murdered were Sarah Hamburger, 79, a resident of downtown
Jerusalem, and Svetlana Sandler, a 56 year-old immigrant from Russia. Sara
Hamburger was a survivor of the 1929 massacre perpetrated by Arabs against
Jews in the Jewish city of Hebron. Policemen, deployed in
greater-than-usual numbers in light of the many terrorist warnings, were
able to overcome and shoot the terrorist to death while he was attempting
to insert a second magazine into his rifle. Both Fatah [led by Arafat] and
Hamas have already taken credit for the attack, saying that this is the
beginning of their retaliation for recent Israeli offensives.

Twenty-two people were wounded when a Palestinian suicide bomber detonated
explosives near south Tel Aviv's old central bus station Friday. The
terrorist, possibly riding a motorscooter, set off the bomb in the densely
populated mixed residential and commercial neighborhood surrounding the old
central bus station. Tel Aviv police chief Cmdr. Yossi Sedbon said,
however, the bomber approached the cafe and leaned on the motorscooter,
leading some to believe he rode the vehicle into the cafe.

:: CNN AND AP TWIST THE FACTS ... AGAIN: In reporting on the Palestinian
shooting spree in Jerusalem on Tuesday, CNN's homepage headline proclaimed:
"Israel Shooting Wounds Dozens". Read carefully. The false implication of
this CNN headline is that Israel perpetrated a shooting spree. In another
article this week, CNN referred to Hamas as "an organization known among
Palestinians on the West Bank and Gaza Strip for actions such as building
schools, hospitals and helping the community in social and religious
ways..." Did CNN forget that Hamas is classified by the US State Department
as a "terrorist" organization, with no differentiation between the military
and political arms? Says the State Department: "Various Hamas elements have
used both political and violent means, including terrorism, to pursue the
goal of establishing an Islamic Palestinian state in place of Israel."

On Tuesday, two separate events occurred: 1) A Palestinian terrorist
sprayed machine-gun fire on shoppers in downtown Jerusalem, and 2) Israel
uncovered a bomb factory in Yesha [Judea, Samaria, and Gaza], subsequently
killing the four Hamas terrorists who operated it. In a vile case of "moral
equivalency," ASSOCIATED PRESS ran the following headline on Tuesday:
"Israel Kills 4, Palestinian Wounds 8" AP would have you believe that it's
tit-for-tat: A 78-year-old Jewish shopper is gunned down, just as a
Palestinian bomb-maker is, too. Recall that earlier this week, AP delivered
another botched headline, in reporting on Israel's incursion into the town
of Tulkarem: "Israel Takes Over Entire West Bank".
............................

:: SUCCESSFUL IDF RAID IN SHECHEM: The IDF carried out a successful raid on
a bomb factory in Shechem Tuesday, killing four of Hamas' most senior
leaders in the Shomron. A laboratory for explosive devices was found in the
building, perhaps the largest ever discovered in Yesha. In the laboratory,
there were explosives ready for use, belts strapped with explosives, and
chemical materials used to create explosive devices. There were also
weapons and a large amount of ammunition.

Meanwhile, the much-touted "re-conquest" of PA/PLO-occupied Tul Karem ended
Tuesday morning, less than 30 hours after it began. The forces destroyed
terrorist infrastructures and arrested close to 50 wanted terrorists, many
of them according to a prepared list. Tanks began leaving Tul Karem, but
they re-deployed around the city, keeping it encircled. Several other
PA/PLO-occupied cities are similarly surrounded.
............................

:: US TO WITHDRAW FROM THE SINAI: The Pentagon has decided to remove the
vast majority of 900 American peacekeepers from the Sinai peninsula and
leave behind a symbolic headquarters, a senior defense official told THE
JERUSALEM POST on Friday. The American troops in the Sinai make up the bulk
of the Multinational Force and Observers, an independent international
peacekeeping and verification organization established by Egypt and Israel
to monitor the security arrangements after their 1979 peace treaty.
............................

:: RUMORS OF WAR ...: Jordan has become the first Middle East customer to
sign up to purchase the Lockheed Martin/Raytheon Javelin top-attack
anti-tank guided weapon (ATGW) system. Raytheon announced the deal on 11
January. It is the second country outside the USA to procure the system;
Lithuania signed a similar agreement on 17 December 2001. Under the deal,
Jordan will receive more than 110 missiles and 30 command launch units
(CLUs). The purchase also includes training devices, logistics support,
associated equipment and training.

Israel has requested that the US cease supplying Egypt with arms systems,
including F-15 fighter aircraft -- because Egypt appears to want to use
them against Israel. In Egypt's last military maneuvers, it identified its
"dummy" enemy as Israel. The US initially refused to respond to Israel's
request, but later changed its mind after receiving intelligence proof that
Israel's charges were valid. Egypt and Israel signed a "peace" treaty in 1978.

Nigeria will explore areas of military cooperation with Iran, Nigerian
Defense Minister Theophilous Danjuma said. During his talks with visiting
Iranian military delegation headed by Iran's Vice Minister of Defense
Hamidreza Partukzade, Danjuma said Nigeria welcomes proposals made by Iran
for a joint military cooperation. The minister said military experts from
both countries will meet to discuss matters related to military
cooperation, particularly weaponry repairs, purchase of weapons and
training of military personnel.

Israel Aircraft Industries, Ltd. (IAI) and the Israel Ministry of Defense
(IMoD) have signed an agreement for the supply of new generation Super
Dvora Mk. II-I fast patrol boats for the Israel Navy. Under terms of the
agreement, the IAI Ramta Division will design and build six of the new
generation boats with options to build five additional craft.

Syria Iraq have discussed bilateral relations in the field of transport and
prospects of boosting them between both countries. The countries underlined
the importance of completing train railway networks between both countries
and discussed the measures taken as to create a Syrian-Iraqi land and naval
companies.

:: ON THE NORTHERN FRONT: Hizb'Allah fired anti-aircraft fire from Lebanese
territory towards Israeli skies on Wednesday. Searches conducted by Israeli
security forces found several fragments inside Israeli territory that
originated from ammunition that had been fired following Israeli Air Force
activity. Shortly after, Hizb'Allah fired anti-tank missiles and mortar
bombs towards IDF posts in the Har Dov section. There were no casualties
among IDF soldiers. IDF forces responded with shell fire toward the sources
of fire. In response, IDF airplanes attacked the sources of fire in the
region of the Shuba village, in the eastern sector of south Lebanon.

:: 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 'FINAL SOLUTION': Sunday marked the 60th
anniversary of the Wannsee Conference in Berlin, at which top officials of
the German Third Reich discussed the "Final Solution of the Jewish
Question." Dr. Nili Keren, Academic Director of Masuah Institute for
Holocaust Studies in Kibbutz Tel Yitzchak, explained: "Their goal was to
show the totality of the matter from all standpoints," she explained.
"Whoever identified himself as a Nazi had to take part in this enterprise
-- which, after all, was the purpose of Nazism; Hitler always said that he
would be successful only if there were no Jews left... The plan, as noted
in the protocol -- which was written by Adolph Eichmann -- included not
only the Jews of Eastern Europe, but also those of England and neutral
countries." Later during his trial in Israel, Eichmann described an
atmosphere of agreement and enthusiasm at the conference. All parties
present wanted to participate, even those men who were generally hesitant
and reserved. The meeting lasted 1 1/2 hours.
