The Enron mess may be costing the White House and GOP valuable political
points.
According to a CBS News/New York Times poll released Saturday night,
Americans are becoming more skeptical about Bush administration officials'
dealings with Enron. Although only 9 percent of respondents say members of
the administration are lying about their dealings with Enron, almost six in
10 believe they are hiding something. This is an increase from last week,
when 44 percent thought members of the Bush administration were hiding
something.
Only 17 percent say the administration is telling the entire truth. Also,
twice as many people think what the Bush administration may be hiding is
something the public needs to know than don't. What's more, Americans view
Enron as having closer ties to Republicans than Democrats and believe the
Bush administration is influenced too much by big business, the new survey
shows.
A consumer watchdog group and senior House Democrat said Friday that Congress
should call Army Secretary Thomas White to testify in the collapse of energy
giant Enron, since he is a former high-ranking Enron executive. The group,
Public Citizen, accuses White of taking actions that could have benefitted
Enron soon after he became Army secretary last spring. He left his position
as Vice Chairman of Enron Energy Services to take the Army job.....

White's role at Enron could become embarrassing for the Bush administration,
according to the Times, because White made tens of millions of dollars during
his 11-year career at Enron and because his appointment was supposed to be a
sign of the corporate culture that the administration planned to bring to the
military.....
Bush aides have said Enron representatives met six times on energy issues
last year with Cheney or his aides....
The White House confirmed that Bush adviser Karl Rove recommended Republican
consultant Ralph Reed to Enron for a job in 1997. Bush, considering a
presidential run at the time, wanted Reed to help him court conservative
voters in the 2000 election.
