USS Essex builds ties with Japanese military

SASEBO, Japan (NNS) -- USS Essex (LHD 2) recently hosted a dozen soldiers
from the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force (JGSDF). Chief petty officers
(CPOs) from Essex invited the soldiers after meeting them at a Bonenkai
party, a traditional Japanese year-end social event, hosted by the local
Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF).

At the event, the Essex CPOs were able to mingle with members of the JGSDF,
and decided to return the favor by extending an invitation to them to visit
Essex. The tour was the first one on Essex for the soldiers, who are assigned
to Camp Takematsu and Camp Ainoura, both in the Nagasaki Prefecture.

"It's a huge ship, but a good environment," Chief Warrant Officer Toshiaki
Sueyoshi said after his tour of the ship. "If something happens that requires
you to go fight, you will be ready because you take care of the ship's crew."

Sueyoshi, who is assigned to the Air Defense Group at Camp Takematsu, said he
was surprised at the number of females on Essex. He said the JGSDF does not
have many females now, but expects to have many more in the future.

For Master Sergeant Akira Ootsuba, also from the Air Defense Group, the tour
provided an opportunity for him to practice his English skills.

"I listen to English on the radio and write down what I hear," Ootsuba said.
"My daughter is also my English teacher." Ootsuba, who visited the United
States three years ago for missile training in El Paso, Texas, also expressed
interest in keeping communication open with Essex Sailors.

This was the second tour for JGSDF soldiers in two months. Twenty-four
soldiers from the basic enlisted English course at Camp Ainoura toured the
ship in December, and were also surprised at the facilities and services
available on the small, floating city. The tour route took both groups to the
flight deck, bridge, medical and other locations of interest on board.

"The visitors were impressed with our combat capabilities, but also with the
resources we have to take care of our crew," Command Master Chief (AW/SW)
Kevin Haun said. "The Bonenkai party opened a window of opportunity for us to
build positive relations with our counterparts in the JMSDF, and these tours
gave the Japanese soldiers a chance to see both the Navy side of our military
and the American way of life."
