idea came from." "

Church settled 6 suits vs. priest - Kept him in post despite allegations By
Sacha Pfeiffer and Stephen Kurkjian, Globe Staff, 1/28/02 The Archdiocese of
Boston settled at least six sexual-abuse cases against a priest accused of
raping teenagers at a treatment facility he ran for troubled young males, yet
allowed him to remain in an administrative position until about three years
ago. The Rev. Bernard J. Lane was accused of sexually molesting teenagers in
the 1970s at Alpha Omega, a Littleton center for troubled youths operated by
the Boston Archdiocese, and at a location in New Hampshire, according to
Frederic N. Halstrom, a lawyer for one of Lane's alleged victims who has a
pending lawsuit against the priest....Documents show Geoghan was coaxed to
retire to help shield the church.....Before Lane had that position, it was
held for two years by Geoghan, who left it in 1996 after public attention was
focused on his abuse of children. Lane retired in 1999. But despite the
seriousness of the abuse allegations against him, he remains a priest.
Geoghan was defrocked in 1998.

Reardon's parents cling to `if only' by Tom Farmer and Laurel J. Sweet
Monday, January 28, 2002 If the Archdiocese of Boston had investigated
complaints against Christopher J. Reardon when they allegedly first surfaced,
it's likely ``90 percent'' of the sexual abuse he inflicted on 29 young boys
would have been prevented, Reardon's parents and lawyer said yesterday.

This may be very heavy for survivors of abuse.

Story: READING BETWEEN THE LINES: THE NEW EDUCATION LAW IS A VICTORY FOR BUSH
 AND FOR HIS CORPORATE ALLIES
Vice President Dick Cheney announced yesterday that the Whitehouse was
prepared to go to court to fight the release of documents demanded by
Congress as part of the investigation into the Enron scandal. But the head of
the General Accounting Office disagrees and has vowed to file suit if the
Whitehouse does not hand over the documents by the end of the week.

Meanwhile, with eyes fixed on Enron, the nation has ignored what is perhaps
the latest victory for crony politics. On January 8, the President signed
into the law the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. It is the most
ambitious federal overhaul of the public school system since the 1960s.

The education act, commonly known as the "Leave No Child Behind Act," has
been hailed by the mainstream media as a bipartisan triumph. The bill
received the full support of Senators Edward Kennedy and Paul Wellstone; and
when it came up for a vote in mid-December, both the House and the Senate
voted overwhelmingly in its favor. But, for all the bi-partisan photo-ops and
the cross-aisle handshakes, make no mistake: the education act of 2002 is a
huge victory for Bush.

....In particular, the textbook and testing industries played a role in the
legislation, crafting the policies from which they now stand to benefit. A
fascinating article recently published in the Nation magazine lays out the
connections clearly, beginning with the long and cozy relationship between
Bush and the famous McGraw publishing family. "The amount of
cross-pollination and mutual admiration between the Administration and [the
McGraw Hill] empire is striking," writes Stephen Metcalf in "Reading Between
the Lines. "Harold McGraw Jr. sits on the national grant advisory and
founding board of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. McGraw in
turn received the highest literacy award from President Bush in the early
1990s, for his contributions to the cause of literacy. The McGraw Foundation
awarded current Bush Education Secretary Rod Paige its highest educator' s
award while Paige was Houston's school chief . . . and Harold McGraw III was
selected as a member of President George W. Bush's transition advisory team."
But that's just the beginning

This may be heavy for survivors.

The strange and convenient death of J. Clifford Baxter—Enron executive found
shot to death By Patrick Martin 28 January 2002

Without anything that can be called a serious investigation, local
authorities in a wealthy Houston suburb have whitewashed the death of former
Enron vice chairman J. Clifford Baxter, calling it a suicide. Baxter, 43, was
found shot to death in his Mercedes Benz in the early hours of Friday
morning, January 25, near his home in Sugar Land.....

The most disturbing account of Baxter's last days comes from a former
business associate who spoke to the New York Times but was not identified by
the newspaper. This person spoke with the former Enron vice chairman two days
before his death and congratulated him "for being named among those people
who complained about Enron."

According to the Times account, the unnamed associate added that Baxter "was
talking about perhaps needing a bodyguard, though I'm not sure where that
idea came from."....

Enron and the Bush administration: kindred spirits in fraud and criminality
By David Walsh 18 January 2002

As evidence one might simply note that the top law enforcement official in
the land, Attorney General John Ashcroft, was obliged to recuse himself
January 10, along with his chief of staff, David Ayres, from the criminal
investigation into Enron launched by his own department because he received
tens of thousands of dollars from the company for an unsuccessful bid to hold
onto his Senate seat in the 2000 elections. The Vice President of the United
States, former oil man Dick Cheney, has been obliged, under pressure from
congressional investigators, to acknowledge that he or members of his staff
met six times with Enron executives last spring during discussions held by
his secret energy task force. The only executive Cheney met with alone was
Enron chief Kenneth Lay.
