Jewish museum show 'a betrayal'

A JEWISH museum has provoked howls of protest with a planned show of
contemporary art that includes a LEGO concentration camp, a gift set
of brand-named poison gas canisters, and a British artist�s self-
portrait of himself sharing Diet Coke with emaciated inmates at
Buchenwald.
Elie Wiesel, the Nobel Prize-winning Auschwitz survivor, has
denounced Mirroring Evil: Nazi Imagery/Recent Art, due to open at The
Jewish Museum, New York, next month, as a betrayal. The exhibition
has also been described in one review as �a Sensation about Nazis� �
a reference to the provocative Sensation show of Young British
Artists in New York in 1999.
Although three of the 13 featured artists come from Britain, the
museum insists that the show is not a Sensation-style publicity
stunt. Four of the artists are Jewish and Norman Kleeblatt, the
curator, whose grandparents and great-grandparents died in the
Holocaust, says it is an attempt to understand how a younger
generation of artists comes to terms with the horrors of the Nazis at
second-hand.
Zbigniew Libera�s LEGO Concentration Camp Set is made up of cardboard
boxes that look like a children�s kit for building a death camp.The
front of one box shows a LEGO inmate being hanged on a toy gallows.
The museum decided that the Polish artist was making an important
artistic statement. �Every viewer becomes implicated in the fact that
there is a potential to turn the building blocks of good into evil,�
Mr Kleeblatt says.
Similarly provocative is Tom Sachs�s Giftgas Giftset, showing gift-
wrapped �designer� poison gas canisters marked Tiffany, Hermes and
Chanel, and his model for a �Prada Deathcamp�.
Alan Schechner, one of the British artists, along with Christine
Borland and Mat Collishaw, said that It�s the Real Thing � Self-
Portrait at Buchenwald was meant to �make people aware of the way in
which Holocaust images were being manipulated by manipulating them
myself�.
