-Caveat Lector- To the editor, When United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, accepted the latest Nobel Peace Prize, he repeated his desire to have UN power supercede the independence of all nations(referred to as "states" by Mr. Annan). He said, "the sovereignty of states must no longer be used as a shield for gross violations of human rights." Yet he welcomes Communist China, Iran, Sudan and other violators of human rights as members of the UN. Only two years ago, in January 2000, Mr. Annan joyfully proclaimed that "state sovereignty, in its most basic sense, is being redefined by the forces of globalization and International cooperation." Such an attitude dovetailed with the assertion of his predecessor, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, who stated in 1992, "the time of absolute and exclusive sovereignty, however has passed." Not only have successive leaders of the United Nations made their campaign against national independence well known, the organization they lead continues to take control of this planet. The world body's lengthening list of commissions, programs, and agencies touch on virtually every element of humankind's activity. The UN already boasts of its presence in the fields of education, population, children, women, environment, trade, finance, health, agriculture, military, labor, science, culture, atomic power, property rights, telecommunications, aviation, industrial development, narcotics, refugees and more. There is only one sane course for a nation that wishes to retain its independence and protect the freedom of its people. It is to withdraw from the UN before the world body's relentlessly increasing grasp for more and more power becomes impossible to oppose. Please call and write your Federal Representative to support Representative's Ron Paul's HR 1146 which will get us out of the United Nations and get the United Nations out of the United States.
