-Caveat Lector-
BF>Once again, we have a matter where there is an apparent discrepency between two
sets of facts
that would seem to contradict one another. There is evidence of a strongly religious
basis for
much of our natin's history. There is also evidence for a strong secularism. There
is evidence
of idealism as well as evidence of cynicism. My problem with Rev. Robertson is that I
do not
believe in historical simplifications. The words "God" and "Providence" have a
Christian
meaning, but also a Jewish, Deist, Muslim, as well as Hindu and Transcendentalist
meanings. The
assumption that Pat Robertson makes is that anyone who uses these terms must believe in
Christianity as he defines it. This ignores the complexity of religious thought
through the
ages, as well as the deeply intellectual nature of American thought at the time.
Intellectuality went out of style since, partly the fault of mass capitalism, partly
the fault
of a merely popularity-based democracy, partly the fault of militarism along with its
attending
distrust of foreigners, and partly the fault of the dumbing down of educational
standards
through the abandoning of reading methods that actually work.
Reverend Robertson also ignores the darker side of the whole equation, assuming
that all was
as it appears to have been in history books. There was a secret component to American
history
that does not contradict the good, but adds a perspective that must be considered.
Ashcroft is
not merely covering up a nude statue. In a sense, he is covering up much more. He is
covering
up a whole galaxy of hidden symbolisms that are part of the landscape of Washington
D.C. So,
indeed, is Pat Robertson covering these things up.
I believe that personal faith was important to Americans, as it always is to
people on the
fronteir. This did not necessarily manifest in documents of an official nature.
However,
individually it was there. It was private, and had little to do with politics one way
or the
other.
All the best,
Bates
