Ny Sen. Wants Aid For 1993 Bombing

NEW YORK (AP) - Relatives of six people killed in the 1993 World Trade Center
bombing should be compensated along with people who lost loved ones on Sept. 11,
Sen. Charles Schumer said Sunday.
``The conditions that made the events of Sept. 11 possible are a result of our failure
as a nation to take the 1993 bombing seriously,'' Schumer, a Democrat, said at a
news conference.
Families of Sept. 11 victims could get $1.6 million on average in federal
compensation.
Schumer said he planned to meet with President Bush and would introduce
legislation to grant benefits for 1993 trade center victims' families. He said he would
also appeal to private sector charities that helped the families of Sept. 11 victims.
New York's other senator, Hillary Rodham Clinton, is also working to include the
1993 survivors in the government compensation package. She was visiting Israel on
Sunday.
Schumer was joined Sunday by a dozen relatives of those killed in the Feb. 26, 1993
bombing.
``How could the president forget us?'' asked Denise Knapp, whose father, Stephen,
died in the bombing. ``I don't understand why we have to fight so hard to get this.''
Knapp said the loss hit hard this past year, when she got married and her father
wasn't there.
The senator said any memorial to the Sept. 11 victims should include the five men
and the pregnant woman who died in 1993. He promised to meet with John
Whitehead, chairman of the Lower Manhattan Development Corp., which is
coordinating the revival of the area.
A call to the development group was not immediately returned Sunday.
The families of 1993 victims said the only public compensation they received was a
scholarship fund for surviving children set up by the Port Authority of New York and
New Jersey, where four of the victims worked.
In the 1993 bombing, terrorists detonated a truck filled with 1,200 pounds of
explosives in the basement of the trade center.
