There's a curious battle going on between Giordano, a U.S. journalist running a drug-war news site from Latin America, and Alternet, one of the big names in "alternative" syndication. Giordano says Alternet is ripping off writers. And, as it's one of the few real players in this market, few writers have complained. Now NarcoNews is complaining. Al says Alternet blacklists reporters in the same way the New York Times has been accused of blacklisting members of the National Writers Union [ http://www.nwu.org/tvt/tvthome.htm ]. (The NWU has fought a long battle over digital reprint rights and payments.) Whether it's Pacifica Radio or Alternet, these do-gooder media collectives aren't immune to the same dirty dealings as Big Evil Media. Think about it: this country has wasted valuable intelligence and military resources on a goofy battle against certain drugs while terrorists lived here and plotted Sept. 11. My drugs of choice are perfectly legal -- wine and cigarettes -- but if they weren't, I'd use them anyway. That the Justice Department, CIA, FBI and Defense Department are still chasing dope is a freakin' outrage.
