Macedonian Police Detain 7 UNHCR Employees, 2 NATO
Soldiers

SKOPJE, Mar 7, 2002 -- (dpa) Macedonian police
temporarily detained seven United Nations workers and
two NATO soldiers Wednesday afternoon, accusing them
of photographing military compounds around Rasce
village near Skopje.

The office of the United Nations High Commissioner for
Refugees (UNHCR) in Skopje confirmed the arrest of its
employees but denied their involvement in alleged
photo-taking near Macedonian army barracks.

The Macedonian army said that UNHCR employees - a
Canadian, Chinese, Macedonian and four Albanians -
were spotted observing and photographing the area near
the Kosovo border.

Police were immediately notified and nine people -
seven UNHCR employees and two NATO soldiers - were
detained, local media reported.

The UNHCR employees requested the NATO petrol to be
present at the scene, but the police also detained two
German soldiers.

The NATO office in Skopje was not immediately
available for comment.
