"Vigilantes" vs. "Terrorists": Enough of double standards from the Washington Post
PMWATCH (Washington) -- March 13, 2002 -- Using the Lexis-Nexis database (see
below),
PMWATCH performed a search for the word "vigilante" within the text of news
reports filed
from Israel/Palestine and published in the Washington Post over the past 17 months.
During that period, seven news stories were found that used the word "vigilante"
somewhere in the text, and not in the context of a quotation. Of those, six
instances of the word "vigilante" were preceded by the word "Jewish" or "Israeli."
The only time a Palestinian group was described as a "vigilante" group was in
reference to Palestinians who carry out attacks on other Palestinians
suspected of conspiring with the Israelis.
In addition to the seven news stories using the word "vigilante," the Post's
ombudsman, Michael Getler, also displayed the bias at work at the Post when,
in his own article which should be aimed at critiquing the Post's coverage
and promoting unbiased terminology, writes that "Israel vigilantes" were
responsible for a shooting which killed three Palestinians - including a
three-month-old infant.
Merriam-Webster's online dictionary defines a "vigilante" as "a member of a
volunteer committee organized to suppress and punish crime summarily (as when
the processes of law appear inadequate); broadly: a self-appointed doer of
justice." Therefore, the one-sided use of this term implies that the Post
agrees that actions such as last week's bombing by an Israeli terror group
of a Palestinian school are justified as actions in which crime was being
punished and justice being served. There are no other definitions for the
word "vigilante."
Another PMWATCH search was performed on Lexis-Nexis for the words "terror" or
"terrorist" appearing within the text of news reports during the same 17-month
period, again excluding direct quotations containing these words.
A total of 189 news articles were found which included the word "terror" or
"terrorist."
A close examination of only those news articles appearing in February and March of
2002
illustrated the clear pattern that would emerge if all 189 articles were examined.
During February and March of this year, 16 news stories used either the word "terror"
or "terrorist" in the absence of quotation marks. All 16 news stories described only
Palestinians' actions or Palestinian groups as "terrorist" or committing acts of
"terror."
The Post's one-sided use of the word "terrorist" has been thoroughly documented,
and does make it quite obvious that this paper shies away from applying the
adjective
to Jews or Israelis, even going to great lengths to find alternative adjectives such
as "vigilante," but does not apply the same restraint when writing about Palestinians
- even when the actions both sides commit are equally condemnable.
Please mobilize and ask your friends to join in a campaign to bring a stop
to these double standards. Fill your personal information, add your comments,
