EYE-WITNESS
USC administrator watched in disbelief as first plane
hit World Trade Center

It's been more than seven weeks since the Sept. 11
attacks on the World Trade Center. But for Puebloan
Paul Romero, it still seems like yesterday.
It was early morning that fateful Tuesday in New York
City.
In just a few hours, Romero was planning to eat lunch
in the World Trade Center. Little did he know that
instead of eating lunch, he would be witness to one of
the biggest news events in world history.
Romero, director of the Center for New Media at the
University of Southern Colorado, got up early and
began getting ready for his final day of consulting at
New Jersey City University.
His taxi driver was to pick him up at 8:30 a.m. Not
wanting to be late, Romero went down early to the
hotel lobby. He had time to walk along the riverfront
and enjoy the view. It would be the last time he saw
the World Trade Center standing intact.
The driver arrived. As Romero was stepping into the
car he heard a jet flying over his head. He thought
nothing of it as he glanced over his shoulder.
"There is lots of noise downtown," he remembered
thinking.
Still, he noticed that the jet was flying low and
erratically.
"It looked small in comparison to the size of the
buildings," said Romero. "It looked like a commuter
plane."
As he placed his briefcase in the car, Romero turned
around and saw the first plane hit the north tower of
the World Trade Center.

A handful of NS&S employees were working near the
World Trade Center towers when the terrorist planes
hit the buildings. They escaped on foot, on boat and,
in one case, by diving into the Hudson River. Here's
their harrowing account of those terrifying few hours.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, six employees of
ITT Industries Network Systems & Services business sat
on the 27th floor of their New York City office.
Two-and-half blocks away, the world was about to
change.
At 8:45 a.m., American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into
the north tower of the World Center. The NS&S
employees heard the news from a phone caller who was
watching CNN, but at that point it was thought to be a
small commuter plane.
"Just another day in New York City," thought Bob
Trautwine, NS&S Americas senior account executive.

I got to the office, and no work was being done.
Everyone was huddled around those desks that had
radios. My boss, Bill, said he had heard on the radio
that the first plane was a commuter plane out of
Westchester that had been hijacked,
