involved - the black stuff could be sulphide plus organisms that process
it
I thought about that. Massive quantities of sulfur dioxide boiling up and mixing with water; S02+H20=H2S03 or thereabouts. The color would be right, and its effects on marine life would be consistent with accounts, but its presence would be obvious. That, and a dilute slurry of sulfuric acid wouldn't effect cloud formations.

Whatever it is could still be volcanic, but right now it doesn't look that way. I can't think of any naturally occurring combination of chemicals or events which could account for the entire range of phenomena in this instance.
