Petersburg, FL - A lawyer who has handled hundreds of sexual abuse cases against the Roman Catholic Church filed two lawsuits today that name the Vatican and Pope John Paul II among those responsible for moving pedophile priests not only between dioceses, but also between countries to avoid prosecution. Previous lawsuits against the Vatican have failed because the Holy See has the protected status of a sovereign nation. But the lawyer, Jeffrey R. Anderson, said at a news conference here today that he had the evidence to establish a pattern of intentional obstruction of justice. One lawsuit, filed here, said a religious brother who molested an 11-year-old boy at a Catholic boarding school in Tampa in 1987 was transferred to New Jersey just after the police showed up at the school to investigate. The other lawsuit, filed in Portland, Ore., said that the church knowingly moved a pedophile priest from Ireland in the 1960's to Chicago and then Portland, where he victimized more children he worked with in schools and parishes. Sociology associate professors Russell Curtis and Karl Eschbach and social work associate professor Patrick Leung analyzed data from the 1993 National Health and Social Life Survey that randomly sampled 3,362 people aged 18 to 59 throughout the United States. UH researchers focused on individuals who were sexually touched before puberty and where they ended up in life. Results showed that individuals who had unsolicited sexual encounters before age 12 were significantly more likely to serve jail time. They were also more likely to exhibit behaviors such as sexual promiscuity and running away from home at an early age, resulting in an increased probability of turning to crime. The executive order called for the creation of an interagency energy task force to accelerate the time it takes for government agencies to review corporations' applications for permits for energy-related projects, like power plants and the exploration of oil and natural gas on public lands. Mr. Bush signed the order last May. But a spokeswoman for the Salt Lake Organizing Committee said the committee does not believe it was required to provide the information. Under Romney, the Salt Lake Organizing Committee pledged that it would not give free tickets to state lawmakers, for fear of negative publicity in the wake of a 1998 bribery scandal. But the committee reversed itself and gave lawmakers 100 free tickets to the Olympics' closing ceremony, valued at $885 apiece, 24 Paralympic Opening Ceremony tickets, valued at $100 apiece, and 11 tickets to the Paralympic Closing Ceremony, valued at $50 apiece. Romney, a Republican candidate for Massachusetts governor, is centering his campaign in part on his tenure at the 2002 Winter Games.
