Conspiracy Theories If I were the person in charge of neutralizing resistance to the "New World Order" or some similar operation the first thing I would do is flood the media with all kinds of bullshit conspiracy theories, each one of which had some merits but which eventually folded under rigorous examination. This would accomplish two important things: First, it would divert attention from the conspiracy of which I was a part of and, second, it would discredit the general idea that a conspiracy exists, inasmuch as the plethora of conspiracy theories out there are either implausible and transparently goofy or, even if they appeared to have merit, were impossible to verify. Conspiracy theories have a strange kind of visceral appeal, especially to people who feel powerless, and they're easy to fabricate. Any skillful writer can whip up a superficially plausable conspiracy theory in a couple of evenings. A number of comic books and satires have appeared to this end. >From the standpoint of a bona fide conspirator, what is important is to keep the noise level high enough to block out the real signal, and the real conspiracy continues apace. Where does one begin in sorting things out? I think the first step would be to discard all metaphysical, religious, and other-worldly conspiracy theories out of hand. The minute the word "cult" or "UFO" appears in a conspiracy theory, it's a red flag. A plausible conspiracy would be entirely rational (although it's manipulative devices would make wide use of irrationality), it would be present-era (ancient conspiracies continuing unabated are highly unlikely), and it would involve an altruistic rationale, such as saving the world from itself. It would also be likely to be in plain view, although concealed largely be selective inattention. More than this I'm not prepared to say.
