by Diane Francis Why is Europe off the hook when it comes to the Middle East mess, condemning Israel and its leader for its "disproportionate" response against suicide bombers? Europe's Jews should have been given half of Germany after the war as compensation. Then today, another million Jews would continue to prosper in the Arab world, as they had for centuries, while the corrupt and incompetent Arab governments put in place by the Europeans would be fighting one another. Unfortunately, what should have happened did not. But isn't it curious how Europe has nicely finessed all responsibility for what's going on? Instead, its leaders sit back smugly, "appalled" at whatever action Israelis, and the Americans, undertake. The European Union last week asked Israel to "lower the violence." France was "appalled." Germany said nothing, which is appropriate. The British wobbled, concerned about their Arab oil franchises and Arab enclaves at home. Belgium threatened to indict Israel's leader for human rights violations. Then the Vatican waded in, which is hardly surprising given its history of hideous alliances, by criticizing the Israelis for "reprisals and revenge attacks." Meanwhile, not a peep about Mr. Arafat, whose spin doctors this week didn't hesitate to kit out a toddler in camouflage gear and an Uzi for a photo op. Mr. Arafat, they would say, does not recruit and brainwash children to kill themselves for his cause. He is a freedom fighter. Go figure. To the Euros, it's always going to be Israel's fault. And they always believe that it's always going to be up to the Yanks to fix everything. This shouldn't surprise. After all, it was only American intervention twice last century that prevented the murderous lot from completely destroying each other. Similarly, it was only American post-war aid that rebuilt their economies so that they could now turn around and look down on everything Washington does. So nothing has changed. [...] We know what the Europeans have been all about. They are a bunch of truly nasty tribes. And frankly, they deserve to be reminded that they are in large measure responsible for the tragedy in the Middle East. Eventually, the Americans will have to be involved. But this will take place only after Israel protects its security, murders as many terrorists as it can get its hands on and banishes Yasser Arafat. Then it can sit down with another Arab leader. My best suggestion is the new, bright King of Jordan. Then negotiations should either create two nations, with Jews only in one and Arabs only in the other. Or else the West Bank should become part of Jordan. (The new King, by the way, prides himself on a school curriculum of computer skills and English starting at age seven - not stone-throwing and hatred as taught in the West Bank.) Then a wall between the two must be erected and guarded by European and American soldiers for as long as it takes. And finally, in the interest if justice, all the costs associated with this, and the reconstruction of the West Bank, should be paid for by the Europeans.
