Venezuelan President Chavez
Resigns - Military Takes Over

4-12-2

CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez resigned on Friday after senior military officers blamed him for violence against an anti-Chavez protest in which at least 10 people were killed, the country's armed forces chief said.

"The president was asked to resign from his post and he accepted," Gen. Lucas Rincon told a news conference broadcast live on national television.

Rincon said all of the members of the armed forces' existing high command were also tendering their resignations.

The announcement came after a succession of senior officers from all four branches of the military -- army, air force, navy and National Guard -- appeared on television calling for the president to resign.

One army general said the country was under the control of the armed forces.
