GERMAN ARMS SUSPENSION COULD HURT TURKEY'S M-60
ANKARA [MENL] -- Germany's suspension of weapons exports to Israel could hurt
Turkey's M-60 main battle tank upgrade program. Industry sources said the German
suspension of defense exports includes components for the engine and transmission
of the engine to be installed in the M-60A1 tank. The components are manufactured
by the German firms MTU and Renk. The state-owned Israel Military Industries has
won a $688 million project to upgrade 170 Turkish M-60 tanks. The project is meant
to complete the modernization within 18 months. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung
reported that MTU and Renk were chosen to supply the engines for the M-60 project.
The German newspaper said their exports to Israel have been halted amid a
decision by Berlin to protest the Israeli military campaign in the West Bank.

EU SUPPLIERS DISMAYED BY ISRAELI EMBARGO
LONDON [MENL] -- Several European contractors have quietly warned their
governments of the consequences of a suspension of defense relations with Israel.
The contractors, which have established joint ventures with their Israeli counterparts,
warned that imposing an embargo on the Jewish state would harm military projects
in Europe. They said European countries such as Belgium, France, Holland, Italy and
Switzerland have launched deals for the supply of Israeli weapons and platforms.
Last week, the state-owned Swiss defense contractor Ruag warned that its munitions
production would be harmed by a suspension of defense ties with Israel. Switzerland
is one of handful of European countries that have announced a review of relations
with the Jewish state amid its military campaign in the West Bank. Over the last three
years, Switzerland has ordered a range of weapons, munitions and platforms from
Israel. Industry sources said Switzerland has ordered $107 million worth of artillery
guidance systems, unmanned air vehicles and and ammunition from Israel.

CHINA, EGYPT SIGN MILITARY ACCORD
CAIRO [MENL] -- Egypt and China have signed an agreement to cooperate in the
development of military technology. The two countries signed three agreements on
Saturday during the visit by Chinese Prime Minister Zhu Rongji. The accords include
cooperation meant to pave the way for joint ventures in a range of fields. Arab
diplomatic sources said the agreement included the transfer of Chinese technology
for joint ventures in defense systems. This could result in the licensed production of
Chinese weapons in Egypt. The official Middle East News Agency said the state
ministers for military production met last week to discuss products. No details were
disclosed but the sources said the two countries discussed the prospect of joint
aviation projects.
