This is not so far removed from what DeGaulle did in the 1960ies when he effected the ban of many "anglocisms" in everyday French culture. The problem appears to be racist or xenophobic or nationalism with a sour taste as had developed in Germany in the 1930ies. This is appearance only. The problem becomes pronounced when people go to a foreign country to experience what that country has to offer (food, drink, goods, culture, history). Then at every turn, they find McDonald's, Starbucks, Walmart, Disney, and who knows what. These are not indigenous to the European continent and are viewed as attempts to eradicate cultures that have evolved on their own very well for centuries. If you've ever eaten a German Big Mac, you'll understand what I mean. It sucks (worse than the bonafide American variety). Of course, this could be an effort to sensitise Europeans to bad2worse American food and foil the invaders at their own game. But they survive and people get used to them. $$$, DM, Euros. They've been doing these things for aeons and then the Americans come back like salmon to the source to deposit their genetically engineered ova in the stream. So what happens? Guys like LePen appear, not to be Nazis or to be South Africans or Dick Armey's idea of the Israelis, not to ethnically cleanse but to preserve their culture. It's a move against ethnic cleansing if nothing else. This is where LePen and the rest are justified and vilified. The question becomes who has first dibs on the culture: those who've been there since forever or those who just got off the train? Just ask the Irish or the Welsh or the Scots or the Manx or any of those in the close orbit of the Engs. It was not until the early 1990ies that any of those could revive their traditional languages for public use. The outsider Engs had forced "English" down their throats for who knows how long, as if they, the newcomers to the heath had more rights than those who had been there since the Picts or beyond.
