Nyc Sexual Assault Suspect Escapes

NEW YORK (AP) - A man believed to be responsible for at least 16 sexual assaults
of mostly young girls escaped from a police office in what marked the sixth time this
year a detained suspect has bolted from New York authorities.
Detective Robert Price said authorities on Tuesday continued to search for the
escaped suspect, who gave police a fake name after being captured on Monday
morning.
The man was taken the office of the Bronx Special Victims Squad, where he was
placed in a first-floor interrogation room for about an hour. But at some point his
handcuffs were apparently removed.
The man voluntarily gave two detectives a saliva sample to be used for DNA
analysis, Deputy Chief Joseph Reznick. He was left alone for a few minute, and
when the detectives came back, he was gone.
An investigation is under way to determine why the suspect was not kept in
handcuffs, and why the room was not locked when the detectives left, Reznick said.
Police are analyzing the DNA sample the suspect gave them Monday to compare
with the DNA evidence from the 15 assaults, and should know by Tuesday if the
suspect is their man, Reznick said.
The attack pattern consists of at least 16 incidents that occurred between March 5,
1997 and Feb. 26 of this year. Fifteen of the cases have been matched through
DNA, Reznick said.
The victims range in age from nine to 58 years of age, although most of them are
teen-age girls, some of whom the attacker followed home from school, Reznick said.
He sometimes would threaten victims with a knife.
``In seven of the cases, the man said he was there to check on a water leak,''
Reznick said.
The escape is the sixth time this year a suspect or prisoner has escaped from New
York Police Department or other law enforcement custody.
Most recently, Kevin Saxon escaped from a correctional vehicle stuck in traffic in the
Bronx on Friday. He was being taken from a Manhattan court to the Westchester
County jail by members of the Manhattan district attorney's squad.
