- OTO was first conceived in the mind of a wealthy Austrian paper chemist and high grade Mason named Karl Kellner. Kellner had the idea of creating an inner circle, an Academia Masonica to be called OTO. This Academia Masonica would later become the 7th and upward degrees of OTO. This Academia Masonica was to teach the Rosicrucian doctrines of the Hermetic Brotherhood of Light and also Kellner's "key" to Masonic symbolism. In a change from orthodox Freemasonry, both men and women were to be admitted to the Order. Kellner discussed his plans with his friend Theodore Reuss, another high grade Mason.
OTO claims to be the repository of the teachings and knowledge of most of the great Orders of the past. Such Orders include those of The Gnostic Catholic Church, The Order of the Illuminati, The Order of the Knights of the Holy Ghost, The Order of the Temple (Knights Templer), The Order of The Knights of Malta, The Hermetic Brotherhood of Light, The Holy Order of Rose Croix of Heredom, The Order of The Holy Arch of Enoch, The Antient and Primitive Rite of Masonry, The Rite of Memphis, The Rite of Mizraim, The Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Masonry, The Swedenborgian Rite of Masonry and many other less famous Orders.
