Amman Iraq and Saudi Arabia are negotiating a free-trade agreement that will
remove restrictions on the flow of goods between the countries, a cabinet minister
said.

Fresh from a Saudi visit, the first by a senior Iraqi official to the oil-rich Kingdom,
Minister of Industry and Minerals Maissar Rija Shlah was also quoted as saying that
the Saudi authorities have agreed to let non-Saudi goods and commodities flow to
the country.

Shlah, in remarks in the government- controlled newspaper al-Iraq on Saturday, also
said Iraq was to back up its customs staff at the border point of Arar with more
officers to oversee and facilitate the flow of goods.

Iraq has so far signed seven free-trade pacts with Arab countries including one with
the United Arab Emirates. The trade agreements are part of a persistent drive by
Baghdad to break its isolation in the Arab world.

Iraq has constructed new facilities in Arar which, apart from customs, include
buildings for travelers and warehouses.

In a further sign of a thaw in relations, Saudi Arabia is also planning to organize a
specialized trade fair in Baghdad.

Trade Minister Mohmmed Mahdi Saleh has been quoted as saying that his country's
purchases of Saudi commodities have exceeded 1 billion dollars in the past four
years.
