Settlements in the West Bank - the authoritative map
Eyal Weizman
This high-detail, colour-coded map with case studies shows the fragmentation of
West Bank territory and the Jewish settlements in painstaking detail. For the first
time, it reveals the potential settlement expansion provided for in masterplans.
This downloadable map is the most contemporary and detailed description of the
Israeli settlement project in the West Bank.
It shows:
 the location, size and form of existing Israeli settlements;
 for the first time, the scope of potential settlement expansion;
 the different jurisdictions;
 the locations of Palestinian settlements;
 the areas under Palestinian limited sovereignty according to Oslo.
The map clearly demonstrates how the West Bank is fragmented in an intertwined
patchwork of hostile national enclaves. The Israeli settlement project created a new
and self-referential geography in the heart of the Palestinian one, as explained in the
Politics of Verticality elsewhere on this site.
The map is also a testimony to the effectiveness with which the settling of 380,000
Israelis in the West Bank achieved one of the projects main aims: the fragmentation
of the territory. It fundamentally disrupts Palestinian contiguity, that could have
allowed for the severing of the West Bank from the state of Israel and the formation
of a viable Palestinian state. Compare Ariel Sharons plan of 1981 for isolated
Palestinian enclaves.
The map shows how the built-up areas of the settlements constitute only 1.7% of the
land in the West Bank, but their municipal boundaries and regional councils now
control a total of 41.9% of the land.
The map synthesises a large number of maps, masterplans, regional plans, and
other data. It is the outcome of a 10-month process of collection, analysis and
charting. The 150 original settlement masterplans proved difficult to get hold of.
Obtaining them usually necessitated travelling to individual settlements, sometimes
even legal action against deliberate delays (masterplans should in principle be public
documents).
Within their municipal boundaries, settlements could still triple their built fabric
and
population. Besides describing a present set of affairs, this map outlines a possible
future. You can download a full-scale PDF version and zoom in and out to see the
detail. Or browse through the case studies beneath, which explain local areas of the
map, from Jerusalem to Jenin.
