Hein-sight
Oath of idiotship
May 20, 2002
Paul Hein pledges not to pledge to government.
If you wish to become a citizen of Britain, you must, at some point, take the following
oath: I swear by Almighty God, on becoming a British citizen, I will be faithful and
bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, her Heirs and
Successors according to law. This oath makes you a vassal of Her Majesty, and
assumes, unjustifiably, that she serves some function other than waving
condescendingly at parades, cutting ribbons, and delivering excruciatingly boring
speeches. Vassal to a figurehead! In taking the oath, one also pledges faithfulness to
her heirs, though they may be mental defectives or sociopaths.
Well, enough of that! After all, the real power of England does not reside on the
throne (we presume!) but in the English government, which is not mentioned in the
oath. So David Blunkett has proposed a new oath that goes like this: I swear by
Almighty God that, from this time forward, I will give my loyalty and allegiance to her
Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Her Heirs, and Successors and to the United
Kingdom. I will respect the rights and freedoms of the United Kingdom. I will uphold
its democratic values. I will observe its laws faithfully and fulfil my duties and
obligations as a British citizen.
Immediately obvious is the increased verbiage. The modern politician is nothing if not
a windbag, and an inane one at that. What, for example, are the rights and
freedoms of the United Kingdom? The United Kingdom is the government; it
neither has nor bestows rights. And democratic values? Is that simply democracy? I
wonder if the Brit-to-be would agree to uphold mobocracy? Probably hed recoil at
the idea; but democracy? Thats wonderful! A synonym from the Greek! It helps if the
brain is switched off prior to taking the oath.
The real clincher, of course, is the promise to observe its laws faithfully and
fulfil my
duties and obligations as a British citizen. The pronoun its proves that United
Kingdom refers to the government, not the nation of people; and the laws are
whatever the elect(ed) say they are. The obligations of a British citizen, in other
words, are to do as told.
Americans, on the other hand, fought a bloody war to rid themselves of servitude to
their distant masters. In this country, the sovereign is neither King nor Lord, but the
citizenry itself! Inspiring! Heres what aspiring Americans swear at the rite of
citizenship: I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and
abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or
sovereignty
of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and
defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all
enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same;
that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by law; that I will
perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when
required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian
direction when required by law; and that I take this obligation freely without any
mental reservation or purpose of evasion, so help me God.
No vassal to Queen or Parliament here! Rather, vassalship to a group of three-piece-
suited millionaires who will, with the greatest -- well, some -- reluctance send you
off
to war to defend their business interests and political careers. They can do it
because you swore an oath youd go along with it. You even swore to provide work
of national importance when they say so-er, when required by law. And if you took
seriously the part about defending the Constitution against all domestic enemies,
youd immediately be at odds with the very government to which you were swearing
allegiance.
One of the mind-wrenching aspects of human nature is that immigrants study and
work to reach the stage where they can take this oath. They rejoice having taken it;
they party! One would think that they would slink home depressed that they escaped
one tyranny only to be compelled to accept another.
And, of course, if it were not the biggest criminal con-game going, youd think that
the
government would take an oath of loyalty to the new citizens, pledging to protect their
rights, especially to life and property, against all comers. Isnt it our servant? Do
servants require oaths of fealty from their masters? We created it; it owes us fealty,
not the other way around.
Finally, if youre an alien in this country, living here sans citizenship and its oath,
arent you still under federal law, and obliged to do whatever the U.S. tells you to
do?
Youre a serf already. So the oath is not merely scurrilous, its a sham. Government
at its best!
