Afghan bug hits British hospital

femail.co.uk - 28th May 2002

More than 100 patients and staff at a hospital have been hit by the same kind of bug
which swept through Royal Marines in Afghanistan, it emerged today.

Sixty three patients and 38 staff across 14 wards at Whipps Cross Hospital in
Leytonstone, east London, have fallen ill with the virus which causes vomiting and
diarrhoea.

Earlier this month about 40 Royal Marines were reported to be suffering from the
virus while serving in Afghanistan.

A spokesman for Whipps Cross University Hospital NHS Trust, said the first case
was reported last Tuesday.

Affected wards were closed to new admissions and infection controls were in place.

People suffering with the virus were being treated with plenty of fluids and all were
expected to recover fully.

To contain the spread of the virus, it was today agreed with the North East London
Health Authority and the London Regional Office of the Department of Health and
Social Care that further restrictions on admissions would be imposed.

As of 2pm today GP referrals for urgent assessment or admissions would continue to
be referred to neighbouring hospitals.

Ambulances responding to 999 calls would not bring patients to Whipps Cross A&E
department - except where it would be unsafe not to do so - although it would still
treat patients who went there directly.

Elective admissions to the hospital would also be cancelled, other than for urgent or
life threatening conditions, and all affected patients would be contacted.
