If so, his treatment is not that shocking considering the nasty games that are played by Intelligence and CounterIntelligence. These guys consider themselves at war - and in war gruesome atrocities are par for the course. American, Arab, Israeli, Russian agents have all suffered cruel fates over the years - and caused much suffering in return. Torture and murder are part of the game. The average American doesn't have a clue (nor does he want one) about the horrific crimes carried out by the US govt - and most other govts on a regular basis. I still don' t understand how a worldly, experienced major league reporter would be so naive as to blindly wonder into a trap - even though he was warned beforehand. Pearl had to know that it was likely that the dangerous elements he was dealing with probably knew of his families' Israeli governmental connection. Makes one wonder if he did not have an undisclosed agenda.
