Polish party concerned over Jewish influence

Rafal Majewski
A high-ranking member of a Polish opposition party expressed concern over the
looming threat posed by Ashkenazi Jews living in Israel, who regard Poland as a
'safety net'.

The ever-worsening situation in Palestine has increasingly prompted Israelis to invest
in Polish real estate, as a final recourse should they need to evacuate the region at
any time, he said.

"They are gaining more and more influence in Poland. They are buying property, and
they are investing in businesses... The Polish don't want to feel like second-class
citizens in their own country," said Rafal Majewski, a member of Samoobrona
Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej (Self Defence of the Polish Republic).

Samoobrona is a populist and anti-European organisation officially launched about
seven years ago. In the late 1990s, it staged disruptive protests and roadblocks
against the government's European and agricultural policies. It considers itself the
voice of the urban unemployed and small business, in addition to Poland's hard-
pressed farmers.

"I don't want to be seen as speaking out against Jews. That is not what our party is
about. But we would like to safeguard the rights of our children, and their future,"
said
Majewski, 36, who is in Dubai on business.

Samoobrona recently spoke out in parliament against Israel's treatment of
Palestinians in the occupied territories.

"We were the only party who protested officially, and submitted a petition... We also
take part in protests organised by the Syrian and Lebanese embassies," he said,
adding that the coverage of events in Palestine in the Polish press is usually skewed
in favour of Israel.

"About 60 per cent of the press is controlled by Jews. The editor of the biggest daily,
Gazeta Wyborcza, is a Jew," he said. "Every three pages or so, you find Jewish
propaganda."

Majewski vehemently denied that Samoobrona may be part of a wave of anti-
immigration sentiments sweeping Europe.

Samoobrona publishes a weekly newsletter, and is currently looking into launching a
daily newspaper.

"We get a lot of bad press. We are popular with the people because we are fighting
corruption, but the establishment does not like us," he said. "We need funding for our
projects, but if possible, we would like to avoid accepting foreign support, as it
would
reflect negatively on us. For the moment, we depend on the private contributions of
our members."

A high support for Samoobrona was one of the biggest surprises of last year's
elections. The party won 53 seats in parliament.

Following the fall of the Soviet Union, Poland has steadfastly pursued a policy of
liberalising the economy and today stands out as one of the most successful and
open transition economies. The privatisation of small and medium state-owned
companies and a liberal law on establishing new firms has allowed for the rapid
development of the country's private sector.

In contrast, Poland's large agricultural sector remains handicapped by structural
problems, surplus labour, inefficient small farms, and lack of investment.

The government's determination to enter the EU as soon as possible affects most
aspects of its economic policies.

"The tax-free importation of European foodstuff is killing our farmers. Polish farmers
cannot sell their products," Majewski lamented. "Yes, our party is against accession
to the EU, under these conditions."

Majewski arrived in Dubai on Thursday, and is scheduled to leave this evening.
