Fox's brother denies foreign funds were used in campaign

Jose Luis Fox denied on Sunday his brother President Vicente Fox used a family
business as a cover to receive illegal foreign funds for his 2000 presidential
campaign.
"We have nothing to hide," he told Mexican daily Reforma. "Fox Brothers is an
enterprise we started eight years ago to export produce."
The president's brother added the family businesses "have absolutely nothing to do
with the transfer of funds to the presidential campaign."
He said the family has supported the president throughout his political career, but
has never provided financial support.
Questions over the origin of funds used during the president's campaign have been a
hot issue since the Federal Electoral Institute (IFE) re-opened an investigation after
a
federal tribunal decided the initial investigation was not complete.
The first IFE investigation was closed in August of last year due to lack of evidence.
However, critics continue to allege Fox used 33,000 dollars of foreign funds
transferred to Fox Brothers through Citibank in New York. Under the Constitution,
accepting foreign funds in a political campaign is illegal.
Jose Luis Fox admitted the money was transferred to Fox Brothers, but he doesn't
remember exactly why.
He added the Fox Brothers business has ceased to operate due to "adjustments,"
and it will be "liquidated" because the family is now exporting produce through other
companies.
The president's brother vehemently defended Fox's track record as well, and said
they are not worried about the current investigation.
"My brother was governor of our state of Guanajuato and now he is the president,"
Jose Fox said. "He has conducted his entire political career with complete
transparency and has worked hard for the good of the Mexican people."
"We have no fear whatsoever (of the investigation)," he added. "We were being
accused of this before the election took place and nothing happened. Nothing will
happen now, either."
