Germans name 'September 11 recruiter'

A VETERAN of the Bosnian Wars has been named as the
recruiter of the Hamburg-based suicide pilots who smashed their hijacked aircraft
into the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon.
German detectives say that Mohammed Haydar Zammar, 41, left Hamburg for
Morocco more than seven weeks after the September 11 attack.
What happened next to Zammar � an important link in the reconstruction of the
events of September 11 � is unclear, but an American counter-terrorism official
told The Washington Post yesterday that he was �not walking the streets�.
The German authorities believe that he may already be held by the United States,
but have received no official confirmation.

The Zammar lead is significant. First, it shows that investigators are targeting
recruiters, since they provide the only explicit link between terrorists in the field
and
al- Qaeda leaders. Secondly, Morocco is emerging as a critical transit land for al-
Qaeda because of the ease with which terrorists can enter Europe across the Strait
of Gibraltar.
Two Moroccans � Said Bahaji, who also has a German passport, and Zakariya
Essabar � are being sought because of their connections with the Hamburg cell
that was led by Mohammed Atta, the September 11 suicide hijackers� leader.
Zammar, who had been questioned and released by the Germans after September
11, travelled to Morocco on October 27, claiming that he had to divorce a Moroccan
woman. He was under surveillance by both US and German authorities, who can
confirm that he arrived in Morocco, but the Germans have been unable to confirm a
Moroccan statement that he left the country for Spain. Some German sources
believe he could have been seized by American agents in Morocco and taken to a
US airbase in Europe.
Zammar�s partner has filed a missing person�s report in Hamburg.
