Israelis place bets on bomb targets
By Alan Philps in Jerusalem
(Filed: 14/06/2002)

Gambling-mad Israelis have found something new to
bet on: where the next bomb will go off.

An illegal gambling ring is offering odds on various parts of the country, with
Jerusalem, often the bombers' target, at 1-2. The Red Sea resort of Eilat, which has
never been hit, is priced at 16-1.

The betting forms were prepared in the working- class town of Kiryat Malachi, south
of Tel Aviv. To qualify for a payout, the attack must be committed by Arabs against
Jews, not the other way around, and it must be reported in the press.

The newspaper Maariv, which first reported on the gambling ring, said: "There's no
limit to bad taste." Police said they had opened an investigation.

Casinos are illegal for religious reasons in Israel, but there is a vast demand and
unlicensed gambling dens are common. One was hit by a suicide bomber last
month, killing 15 Israelis.

The government has just authorised a flying casino in which gamblers will circle
over the Mediterranean in an aircraft to get around the law.

Until the outbreak of the Palestinian uprising in September 2000, Israelis used to
flock to the Oasis casino in Jericho which, being under Palestinian rule, was not
subject to Israeli law.

Many gamblers would, no doubt, be ready to take the ultimate risk and go to Jericho
for a flutter even though it is in hostile territory. But the Israeli army has sealed
off
the area with a checkpoint and no Israeli is allowed to pass, forcing the casino to
close.
