Catholic dioceses find insurance falls short in sex abuse cases - Bob von Sternberg Star Tribune 7/27/02 "As accusations of sexual abuse by priests continue to pile up, the expensive experience of two Minnesota dioceses could provide a cautionary tale for the nation's bishops. Bottom line: It will take a lot more than liability insurance to cover the cost of settlements and civil judgments being paid to abuse victims....A recent survey conducted by the Associated Press found that more than 200 priests nationwide have been removed from their church duties since January. During that period, at least 300 civil suits alleging sexual misconduct by priests have been filed, the AP found....Four years ago, a Texas jury awarded $119 million to 11 abuse victims; the Dallas diocese managed to whittle that down to a $23.4 million. Also in 1998, the diocese paid $7.6 million to two brothers who had been molested by a priest.
