After repeatedly running over her husband in a hotel parking lot, Clara Harris
apologized, said she loved him
and pleaded for him to breathe as he lay beneath her car, an eyewitness said Saturday.

The dying man's teenage daughter, who had been in the car, got out and punched Harris
in the face before
both collapsed in tears, said Angela Reyes.

Reyes said she watched the incident Wednesday night as she sat in her car at the
Hilton Hotel at 3000 NASA
Road 1 on Clear Lake.

David Lynn Harris, a 44-year-old orthodontist with a practice in Clear Lake City, died
later that night at a
nearby hospital.

Services were held Saturday in Pearland.

Clara Harris, his wife of 10 years, is free on $30,000 bail after being charged with
murder.

The fatal incident climaxed a confrontation that began when she and her husband's
16-year-old daughter
from a previous marriage went into the hotel lobby and found David Harris with a
woman, witnesses said.

Clara Harris, a dentist who also is 44, hit and shouted at the other woman as David
Harris tried to push his
wife away, said witness John Tyler, who had attended a church service there.

The scuffle seemed to have ended after everyone went outside, Tyler said.

Reyes, 22, said she had gone to the hotel to pick up her boyfriend, who works there,
about 9 p.m.
Wednesday. She said that, while waiting in her car in the back parking lot, she saw a
hotel employee escort a
man and a woman to a Lincoln Navigator parked nearby.

The couple, she later learned, was David Harris and Gail Bridges. The Navigator, a
sport utility vehicle, is
registered to Bridges.

Harris opened the passenger door for Bridges and was walking around to the driver's
side, Reyes said, when
she heard tires squealing and saw Clara Harris' silver Mercedes- Benz sedan.

"I don't even know how she made it around the corner, she was going so fast," Reyes
said. "It was a sharp
turn. That's when she hit him. He flew up and over to the next parking lot.

"She jumped the curb and went over there and was just doing doughnuts," Reyes said,
referring to the car
going in circles.

The man was propelled about 25 feet by the impact, said Harris County prosecutor Mia
Magness.

During Harris' arraignment hearing Friday, Magness said the woman drove over two
grassy medians and ran
over her husband three more times before putting the car in reverse and leaving it
parked on him.

Reyes said that, when Clara Harris initially hit her husband, her Mercedes scraped the
Navigator "but she
kept on going. She gassed it and jumped the curb."

She said she could see the teenager, in the front seat, trying to get out.

"Her door came out, and her leg was hanging out."

When the car finally came to a stop, Reyes said, the girl got out, walked around and
hit her stepmother in
the face with her fist. She then burst into uncontrollable sobs.

"She just punched her," she said.

Clara Harris had gotten out, looked at her husband and was yelling, "I'm so sorry! I
love you! Keep
breathing!" Reyes said.

She said her boyfriend told her that Harris had come to the hotel on Monday, asking
questions such as
whether there was more than one place where guests could register and where the
entrances were located.

Harris had hired a Clear Lake-area private investigation agency on Tuesday to monitor
her husband. A source
close to the case told the Chronicle that Harris had given the agency the name of the
woman her husband
was seeing and the locations where they could be found, including the Hilton near
Johnson Space Center.

The source also said David Harris recently had told his wife that their marriage was
over and that he was
involved with another woman.

"I think he wrote his own death sentence," the source said.

The Harrises, who shared a mansion in Friendswood, had 3-year-old twin sons.

In the arraignment hearing Friday, state District Judge Carol Davies warned Harris
that her bail would be
revoked if she attempts to contact the other woman, who was identified as Bridges, 38.

According to Galveston County court records, Bridges, who lived in League City, filed
for divorce in April
1999, alleging discord and conflict of personalities.

Her husband, Steven E. Bridges, countersued and accused her of cruel treatment and
adultery.

The couple, who had three children, were married on July 16, 1988. Their divorce was
final in November
2000.
