Springfield News:

4 facing charges in child molestation
Friday, August 2, 2002
By KIM RING

WARREN Four area residents face dozens of charges that they
molested as many as 10 children over several years at a home on Bemis
Road.

Police said yesterday that the arrests came after a five-month
investigation, which is continuing.

"This is the worst case I have ever seen," said Stephen E. Granlund, the
Police Department's sexual investigator, yesterday. "And it doesn't end
here."

Granlund, along with police from Palmer and Ware, made the arrests late
Wednesday night and early yesterday morning after obtaining warrants
from Western Worcester District Court in East Brookfield.

Phyllis T. Hopkins, 36, and her husband, Adam G. Hopkins, 38, both of 46
Bank Street, Ware; her former husband, Robert P. Lloyd Sr., 35, and her
former brother-in-law Albert S. Kurtigian, 51, both of 1339 Main St.,
Palmer, were arrested and charged with multiple counts.

According to police, some of the children who told them they had been
molested said they had been shown a digital video disc which "depicted
the torture and killing of naked females" or adult films or magazines.

Police said the alleged victims included both males and females and that
the alleged offenses dated from 1990 to 1999. All of the incidents took
place in Warren, said Granlund.

Phyllis T. Hopkins was ordered held on bail after being arraigned on
charges including three counts of indecent assault and battery on a
child under 14 years old, two counts of open and gross behavior, two
counts of dissemination of matter harmful to a minor, and indecent
assault and battery on a child over 14 years old.

Roger Banks, representing her, told the court that she is a customer
service representative at Wal-Mart and the mother of five. Banks
questioned the credibility of the victims and asked Judge Charles A.
Abdella to release his client on personal recognizance.

While Assistant District Attorney Todd Mathieson requested that bail be
set at $5,000, Abdella instead set the bail at $15,000 cash.

Abdella ordered Adam Hopkins held on $150,000 cash bail, and appointed a
lawyer to represent him.

Hopkins, dressed in a black sleeveless shirt and with a grim reaper
tattoo on his arm, told the court that he could not afford a lawyer.

Adam G. Hopkins is facing 21 charges, including rape of a child under 16
years old with force, five counts of indecent assault and battery and
rape. According to the police report, Hopkins showed the torture
videotape to an alleged victim when she was 15 years old.

Another victim alleged that Hopkins forced her repeatedly to perform sex
acts on him while he sexually abused her.

Albert S. Kurtigian Sr., a 50-year-old widower, sniffled and wiped at
his eyes in court yesterday. His bail was set at $25,000 after Mathieson
told the judge that he had a record, including charges that he had
failed to show up in court.

Kurtigian, who has a 10th-grade education, shook during the arraignment
and asked a court officer who was leading him out of the courtroom in
handcuffs, "Am I free?"

Kurtigian is facing six charges, including two counts of rape and abuse
of a child under 16 and two counts of assault and battery on a child
under 14.

Abdella ordered Lloyd held on $50,000 cash bail after hearing the 15
charges he faces. According to police reports, an alleged victim claimed
that Lloyd tied her up and raped her when she was six years old.

Police said young male victims reported that Lloyd fondled them and
asked them to perform sex acts.

All four suspects were ordered to stay away from the alleged victims and
to have no contact with anyone under 16 years old.

All are due back in Western Worcester District Court in East Brookfield
on Aug. 19 for a pretrial conference. Kim Ring may be reached at
