Nebraska Senator Hagel Charges US Attack on Iraq to Provide Cover for
Transfer of Palestinian Population
WASHINGTON D.C. -- Senator Chuck Hagel, Republican of Nebraska, who was
among the earliest voices to question Pres. George W. Bush's war plans
against Iraq, said on Aug. 15 that the Central Intelligence Agency had
"absolutely no evidence" that Iraq possesses or will soon possess
nuclear weapons.
Hagel said he was concerned that President Bush's policy of pre-emptive
strikes at governments supposedly armed with weapons of mass destruction
could induce India to attack Pakistan, and could create the political
cover for Ariel Sharon to expel Palestinians from the West Bank and
Gaza.
"You can take the country into a war pretty fast," Mr. Hagel said, "but
you can't get out as quickly, and the public needs to know what the
risks are." He added, "Maybe Mr. Perle would like to be in the first
wave of those who go into Baghdad."
Hagel's reference is to Richard N. Perle, a fanatical Zionist and former
Reagan administration official, who has been orchestrating an urgent
American atack on Iraq, along with Senator Joseph Lieberman and Defense
Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
Other leading Republicans dissenting from the Bush war on Iraq include
Brent Scowcroft, the first President Bush's national security adviser,
and House Majority leader Dick Armey, who is retiring.
