U.S. FIRMS SEEK ALTERNATIVE TO ISRAELI COOPERATION WASHINGTON [MENL] -- Major U.S. weapons contractors are urging the Bush administration to develop alternatives to joint anti-missile programs with Israel. The contractors have told both the administration and Congress that without such an alternative the United States and its defense industry would be largely dependent on Israel in the development and production of major anti-missile systems. Instead, the contractors are urging the administration to quickly approve industrial cooperation with European, particularly British firms. The U.S. firms include Boeing, which has reached an accord to coproduce the Arrow-2 interceptor in the United States. Last month, Boeing and the European Aeronautic Defense and Space Co. announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding to develop missile defense systems. Boeing said it signed similar agreements with BAe and Alenia-Spacio, a unit of Italy's Finmeccanica. "The transatlantic team effort will focus on creating end-to-end products for global missile defense," Boeing and EADS said in a statement. NOTE: The above is not the full item.
