w w w . h a a r e t z d a i l y . c o m Country on high alert for `showcase' holiday bomb attack As a result of intelligence information that terrorist organizations seek to succeed with "showcase" attacks during the Rosh Hashanah holiday, the security forces are on a very high state of alert. The Shin Bet has received numerous warnings regarding the aims of terrorist organizations to carry out a mass attack during the holiday and possibly a series of attacks throughout the holiday season. Senior security sources said yesterday that following a number of relatively quiet weeks the terrorist organizations are seeking to initiate a new wave of attacks and seek as many casualties as possible. Much of the information received by the security services has come from interrogations of terrorist suspects, but also from other sources. The information suggests the terror threat is immediate. One indication was yesterday's attempt to move a car laden with explosives across the Green Line (see story this page). This was one of many recent attempts that were stopped in time. Abed al-Hafez Ajabariya was arrested yesterday in the village of Shwika, north of Tul Karm, suspected of planning to order a suicide bomb attack against a target in central Israel today. Two would-be suicide bombers, both Hamas activists, were arrested yesterday at the Balata refugee camp in Nablus. Intelligence assessments hold that several factors have led to the recent efforts by terrorists to strike, among them the recent civilian casualties suffered by the Palestinians and will to counter the feeling inside Israel that the presence of the Israel Defense Forces in the territories is proving effective against terrorism. "The terrorist organizations would like to prove that they are still active and capable of striking us hard and striking a moral blow against the people of Israel," senior officers noted. "They [the terrorists] mention the attack against Park Hotel in Netanya, which took place on Passover eve, as the paradigm which should be emulated and as an incident that caused a crisis in Israel, so they would like to see an encore." Information about pending attacks was the main subject of meeting held yesterday at the Defense Ministry, including senior army officers, the police, the Shin Bet and Defense Minister Benjamin Ben- Eliezer. During the meeting it was decided to raise the level of alert to the highest level and beef up security forces to block passage of any suicide bombers from the territories into Israel. As part of the alert, the IDF will use troops to reinforce police patrols, and soldiers will be patrolling the big cities. In addition, the police intends to set up roadblocks on roads and highways in the center of the country and set up permanent police watches in malls, shopping centers, hotels, and entertainment centers.
