1. A POP-STAR PRESIDENT
Reality programming
continues to push the
bounds of entertainment.
Now it intends to play
around with the
presidential election
process.
The FX cable channel has
plans to produce a series
called ?American
Candidate.? The aim is to
choose a potential
president of the United
States.
The program is modeled
after ?American Idol? with
a slight difference. This
time the winner could
become a possible
contender for leader of
the free world.
The show is scheduled to
air in early 2004 and
conclude with a live July
Fourth show at the Mall in
Washington, D.C. Tapings
will take place at
historical settings like
Mount Rushmore, Gettysburg
and the Statue of Liberty.
Applications will be
accepted from U.S.
citizens who will be 35
years old by Jan. 20,
2005. All candidate-
contestants will be
required to have a
petition signed by 50
supporters. A panel of
experts will narrow the
field to 100
semifinalists, two from
each state.
Participants in the show
will vie for public
support through debates
and speeches. And, of
course, viewers will
follow the usual reality
formula of slowly but
surely removing
candidates.
No word yet on whether Pat
Buchanan, Harry Browne,
Howard Phillips and Ralph
Nader are considering
auditioning. Perhaps they
should. At least then
they?d have a shot at a
prime-time debate.
The Left Coast Report
thinks it?s frightening to
ponder, but after Al
Gore?s antics during the
2000 election, would
anyone be surprised if
Americans think they?d
just as soon have a
candidate chosen by TV
viewers?

2. LOOSE-LIPPED ROBBINS
Tim Robbins just couldn?t
keep his mouth closed any
longer. The actor/activist
and longtime significant
other of fellow leftist
Susan Sarandon was in D.C.
when he decided to let a
few choice quotes fly.
According to the
Washington Post, Robbins
is concerned about the
definition of ?liberal.?
?I hear people described
as liberals all the time
that I don't tend to agree
with. I think the rise of
the Southern Democrats and
the Democratic Leadership
Council has pushed the
definition of what's a
liberal farther and
farther to the right.?
Robbins calls Republicans
?cynical.? He speculates
about their motives,
apparently believing that
the talk about Iraq is
meant to ?? change the
subject from Cheney and
Halliburton and the
crumbling confidence in
the stock market.?
The actor/director also
has some unoriginal and
ill-fated advice to offer
on how the U.S. should
conduct foreign policy. He
says: ?Let's not be so
arrogant as to believe we
can do whatever ? we want
regardless of what the
Europeans, the Chinese or
the South Americans think.
It's not good.?
The Left Coast Report
wonders how Robbins could
suggest that we need to
obtain the approval of the
Europeans, Chinese and
South Americans before we
protect our safety and
security. Guess he?s
working on a sequel: ?Dumb
Man Talking.?

3. DOLLARS AND SCENTS
Nothing brings celebrity
couples together like the
smell of money.
Tom Cruise and Nicole
Kidman are having a
reunion of sorts. They?ve
joined hands to file a
lawsuit against a
cosmetics chain for
allegedly using them to
plug perfume.
The defendant in the
action is Sephora USA. The
couple?s suit claims that
ads in 2001 for Sephora's
"Celebrity Scents" created
the misleading impression
that they ?used,
preferred, endorsed or
sponsored Sephora's
products.?
The divorced duo wants $15
million in damages.
They?ve requested that the
award be tripled, based on
federal law.
The Left Coast Report
expects that if this case
goes to trial, the jury is
going to have to determine
which side stinks.

4. CHELSEA TV
Chelsea Clinton is about
to make her television
debut in the U.K. She?s
slated to appear in the
Christmas special of
?Absolutely Fabulous.?
The stars of the show,
which also airs in the
U.S., are Jennifer
Saunders and Joanna
Lumley. The two play the
Bollinger-guzzling Patsy
and Edina.
Chelsea is going to appear
in a scene where she will
be hanging around a store.
Patsy and Edina will be
inside the store as the
Chelsea character tries to
maneuver her way into
Patsy's magazine.
The real-life Chelsea is
enrolled at Oxford,
although she and her
boyfriend don?t seem to
spend an undue amount of
time there.
The Left Coast Report
notes that although
Chelsea may have her
picked up her daddy?s
study habits and penchant
for TV, at least she?s not
abroad protesting U.S.
policy ? yet.

5. PARENTING GOES TO POT
Two years ago Melanie
Griffith publicly declared
that she would smoke pot
with her son, Alexander,
if he wanted to try it.
She now sees the error of
her ways.
"I said that if my son
wanted to smoke pot, I
would smoke it with him,"
Griffith tells More
magazine. She adds that
she kept her word and
smoked weed with her son,
with terrible results.
?I thought it was a good
idea, but ultimately, it
wasn?t ? I did ? and it
backfired. He liked it.
Now he?s on the [12-step]
program.?
Alexander is seeking
rehabilitation with
Narcotics Anonymous.
Griffith has two other
children and has vowed not
to make the same mistake
twice.
The Left Coast Report
reluctantly recalls that
the post-sixties
permissive parenting style
was embraced by the left
and, unfortunately, it has
turned out to be the rehab
industry?s best friend.

6. TREASON BY ACTING
Vietnamese government
officials have been trying
to figure out whether Don
Duong, one of Vietnam's
most famous actors, should
be fined, disqualified
from acting or exiled for
a period of time.
The Vietnamese actor co-
starred with Mel Gibson in
?We Were Soldiers.? Now
the Vietnamese armed
forces have tagged him a
traitor.
The Quan Doi Nhan Dan
(People's Army) daily
newspaper says that by
appearing with Mel Gibson
in this year's war epic
?We Were Soldiers,? and
with Patrick Swayze in the
2001 refugee drama ?Green
Dragon,? Duong has
committed treason.
The paper refers to
Duong's actions as
?unforgivable? and
concludes that the
?traitor must be strictly
disciplined.?
Ho Chi Minh City's Cinema
Association has piled onto
the Duong attack and Ho
Chi Minh City authorities
are thinking about a
number of possible
punishments for the actor,
including taking away
travel and acting rights.
Although both films
mentioned are officially
banned in Vietnam, black
market copies are widely
available.
The Left Coast Report
hopes that Hollywood is
listening and realizes how
a repressive communist
regime handles dissent.

7. REDFORD STUMPS FOR
PROSECUTOR
Raindrops are falling on
one Republican candidate?s
head.
Michigan Secretary of
State Candice Miller has a
bigger challenge than
expected in her run for
Congress against Macomb
County Prosecutor Carl
Marlinga ? an endorsement
for her opponent from none
other than Robert Redford.
According to the Detroit
Free Press, Marlinga's
first ad includes a radio
testimonial from Redford
in which the actor/
director praises the
prosecutor for fighting
for a cleaner Lake St.
Clair.
Candice Miller Redford
goes on to urge voters to
choose Democrat Marlinga
in November.
The Left Coast Report
exposes yet another
example of how the
Hollywood full court press
is trying its best to
deliver the House to Dick
