Bush Senior praises 'special relationship'
27th September 2002

ormer US President George Bush Senior today praised the historical close relationship
between Britain and the United States.

Mr Bush was joined by the Prince of Wales as principal guests of honour at the
rededication
ceremony of the American Air Museum at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, Cambs.

Mr Bush said: "This relationship is a major reason why I look to the future I'm an
unabashed optimist.

"Despite the current war against terror which will go on because of its shadowy
nature, it's
not going to be a signing over of the peace treaty on the US Missouri.

"It's a very different kind of war but despite that and despite the Iraqi regime and
other
dangers we must confront in an unpredictable world, I still believe that the collective
commitment of the international community to a new order of freedom with justice and
democracy will continue to mould a kinder, gentler world for generations to come."

Mr Bush said the special bond between the two countries had been created "amid the
rubble" of the Second World War between US President (Franklin D) Roosevelt and Prime
Minister Winston Churchill.

He said: "The relationship really saved the world. A special relationship was formed
and is
one that still shapes global events today."

Mr Bush said he had worked to continue the relationship when he was president with both
Margaret Thatcher and John Major.

The former 41st president of the USA was speaking at a special ceremony to rededicate
the
museum which was opened in 1997 by the Queen.

It now serves as a memorial for the 30,000 US airmen who gave their lives while flying
from British bases during the Second World War.

The Prince of Wales echoed the former president's comments about the link between
Britain and America.

Describing the museum as a truly Anglo-American project, Charles added: "It symbolises
a
continuing bond between our two countries." He said that bond had gone from strength to
strength over the years.

Speaking about the museum, the Prince said: "This museum is not just a static reminder
of
an era that's long since past, but a living exhibit that represents the enormous
technological
advances in the field of powered flight."

He said it was fitting that next year marks the 100th anniversary of the first Wright
brothers' flight and the exhibits at Duxford were a testament to the achievements of
the last
century.

A museum would not have been possible without the "incredible generous help of all our
American friends", adding that it was a fitting memorial to the thousands of airmen who
lost their lives.

He said that for those who were born after the last war, the museum is an opportunity
to
acknowledge and pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for others.

Earlier in the day both Mr Bush and the Prince were given separate tours of the Museum.

Mr Bush, 78, was escorted by the patron of the museum, the Duke of Kent and spent a
great deal of time looking at a replica of a Grumman Avenger torpedo bomber - the sort
he
flew himself during the Second World War.

Mr Bush carried out 58 combat missions in the Pacific during the war and had to bail
out on
one of them when his plane was hit. He was later picked up by colleagues.

After posing for photographs in front of the plane, Mr Bush asked one of the
photographers
for a copy and even left his business card that simply said: "George Bush."

Both he and the Prince met veteran airmen who had been based in Britain during the war.
Colonel Robert Vickers, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, met the Prince and said: "He said
we
looked fit enough to fly still and asked if we did. He was a very charming man."

The two special guests met briefly before a lunch and Mr Bush revealed to Charles that
his
wife Barbara was the future King's "number one American fan."

Around 2,000 war veterans, friends and family attended today's event which was started
by
a flypast by three RAF C-130 Hercules from 47th squadron RAF Lyneham and two pairs of
F-15 Eagle jet fighters from 494th squadron Lakenheath.
