--- Begin Message --- -Caveat Lector- UPDATES: 1-- Reminder: PBS Frontline debuts Fall programming Oct. 3 with documentary on FBI Deputy Director John O'Neill, who in Aug. 01 resigned from his post over Bush's policy on terrorism and Osama bin Laden. O'Neill's NY department was told to "back off" their bin Laden and Al Queda investigations while the Bush administration negotiated with the Taliban. O'Neill became the security chief of the World Trade Center - where he died on 9/11. (more information below updates). http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/knew/
2-- On 12 Sept '02, Votermarch, a voting rights organization, officially joined the peace movement with a major protest against Bush outside the U.N. the day after their 9/11 remembrance. This move to join the peace mission had been discussed for some time, and I like to think Eugene and the Not In Our Name movement was instrumental in the decision. I had sent the Director, Lou Posner of NYC, a copy of the flyer done for the Eugene 9/11 24-hour vigil and Day of Community for Peace and Justice, and the NYC VM branch was in complete agreement with its message. If Bush was going to exploit 9/11 to promote war, then the voting rights organization had to expand to challenge it. Click here: Voter March
And don't forget ANTI-WAR RALLY IN EUGENE-OCT. 5 @ 1 PM. Federal Building plaza at 7th & Pearl Streets. FOR MORE INFO CALL CALC at 541-485-1755.
3-- CONGRESS OVERWHELMED WITH ANTI-WAR CALLS FROM "THE SILENCED MAJORITY"--*DEMOCRACY NOW EXCLUSIVE* 09/27/02. Plus excerpts from Breslin and Huffington columns.
GIVE IMPEACHMENT A CHANCE: The fact that bush & co. are using 9/11 to promote their oil war exposes a scuminess that maybe a New Yorker can feel more empathy for (?). So below also are exerpts from Breslin's column on the subject of why using NY and the tragedy of New Yorkers is so easy for the GOP and their puppets. And Huffington grasps why we ALL should be major pissed off at this tactic. Sure, there are many reasons to despise the bastard bush regime (and the dems that go along with it), but their defiling of the 3000 dead of 9/11 is the PRETEXT THEY ARE USING TO GET THE RED STATE PUBLIC TO RISE UP AND SUPPORT IT. There ought to be a special place in hell for grave robbers like this.

October 3, 2002 Frontline on PBS: John O'Neill, the man who knew. My note: Often the fighting over parties and party failings obscures the courage of the individual contribution. But in the end, it is the individual - the individual principle and the individual person with principle - that moves us and deserves our respect. We can think of Martin Luther King, Ghandi, and Rachel Carson is also way up there.... people who operate on their own, following their own lights. More locally, Lloyd Marbet is the first activist I ever read about when I first came to Eugene, and it amazes me to see that he is STILL AT IT, doing what he thinks is right and what is necessary. I think John O'Neill was that type of person also, albeit at a smaller level -- job well done and all that sort of thing. It is no secret that I think he was a heroic civil servant. It is not easy not to be a go-along when you risk your livelihood to do what is right. I don't know if this Frontline show captures his righteousness or exposes a massive ego, but I think it's worth a look-see. Certainly he compares very well with "the man" in power today - our national standard-bearer - a man who did nothing to protect the lives of thousands of Americans and who may have deliberately placed them in peril when he threatened the Taliban with bombs at the same time removing protections in place from the former administration. We need to remember that the likes of John O'Neill died honoring their duty while the President of the U.S. remains unimpeached, threatening to incinerate even more people on his watch.
<FRONTLINE kicks off its 20th anniversary season with "The Man Who Knew," the extraordinary saga of FBI Special Agent John O'Neill. As the bureau's top counterterrorism agent, O'Neill investigated the bombings of U.S. embassies in Africa and the attack on the USS Cole and came to believe the U.S. should kill Osama bin Laden before Al Qaeda launched a devastating attack on America. His often lonely voice was muted by a headquarters bureaucracy that found his hot pursuit and James Bond style anathema. Forced out of the job he loved, O'Neill took a new position in the private sector--as head of security at the World Trade Center, where he was killed on September 11. The story of O'Neill's life and death provides a rare glimpse inside the FBI and helps answer the question: What did government know?

*** DEMOCRACY NOW EXCLUSIVE *** Sept. 27, 2002 (excerpt)
CONGRESS OVERWHELMED WITH ANTI-WAR CALLS FROM "THE SILENCED MAJORITY"
Republican and Democratic Senate offices report "overwhelming" opposition from their constituents to war with Iraq. This comes as Congress prepares to pass a war resolution granting President Bush sweeping powers to invade Iraq. The national news radio show Democracy Now! conducted an informal survey on Thursday of 70 Republican and Democratic Senate offices. Of the 26 offices which responded to our inquires, 22 reported an overwhelming majority - in some cases up to 99 percent -- of constituents opposed war in Iraq.
"It's extraordinary that, as Senators work with the Bush Administration to draft a war resolution, their constituents are expressing overwhelming opposition an attack against Iraq," said Amy Goodman, the host of Democracy Now! "Unfortunately we are hearing very little about this in the media. These calls represent the silenced majority, not the silent majority."
Democracy Now is a daily nationwide news show based in New York. It is broadcast on over 130 public radio and television stations around the country. Listen to the Democracy Now report at:

Reminder: AN ATTACK ON DEMOCRATS IS STILL AN ATTACK ON AMERICA: Bush and Republicans are trying to use the war on Iraq and homeland security as partisan political tools in this year's elections, falsely claiming that Democrats are more interested in protecting "special interests" than the American people. No matter how they dress it up, they are making a direct attack on the loyalty and patriotism of union members and civil servants, the same kinds of people who were first on the scene after the September 11 attacks:
a.. The courageous and selfless police officers, firefighters and EMS personnel.
b.. The hard hats, government employees, and others who helped clean up the devastation and risked toxic exposure.
c.. The postal workers who lost their lives to anthrax attacks and the ones who continue on the front lines of potential biological attacks.

City Set Up For Slaughter
By Jimmy Breslin
09/26/02
I am walking in a silent city. There is supposed to be noise that does not stop but there is none now. We are, here in New York, the only place in the world that terrorists want to blow up. They'll take Washington as a second choice, but NY is the prize, the place Arabs will die for. NY is a place filled with Jews and blacks and islanders, and the government in D.C. doesn't care for any of them or what happens to them.
We all know who attacked us on 09/11/01, don't we? No, not Osama bin Laden. God, that is so last year. It never turns out to be the person you first suspect. It was Saddam Hussein! For some reason we couldn't find him when we went after him in Afghanistan, bringing that magic elixir of regime change along with us. But now we've got a better idea: track him down where he actually lives, in Baghdad, and punish him right in his own backyard. It's the only way to obtain justice for the thousands he killed on 9/11.
And nobody says anything about it anywhere. So yesterday NY sat in silence, and here was the government in Washington out actively promoting our chances to get blown up.
All through this World Trade Center turmoil I wondered why the Bush administration was so openly frightened of questions about why nobody knew the trade center bombing was coming, or did they know enough about it and simply say, it's NY, we'll see what it's about when we get a chance? Let's not get in a turmoil. This is about NY. Who cares? They're not ours.
New York doesn't vote right, talk right, eat right, worship right, do anything right that the rest of us do. Why, the city doesn't even have a college football team worth mentioning. The whole state hardly has one. They got no men in the whole state. Look here in Texas. We got seven big ole championship teams right in front of you.
The Psalm-singing Bush people want the thrill of the first-day invasion notices in Iraq without ever having to care about the catastrophe in New York that is sure to follow. If not today, tomorrow. If not tomorrow, then anytime they get here.
They do not need some huge device. A body bomb on Fifth Avenue is all they need. That body bomb and all the others on all the streets after it, and the disease tossed into the subways.
The administration's war requires hundreds of thousands of soldiers, enough planes to darken the sky, bombs as thick as rain, billions in armaments, to give this Iraq and Hussein the beating that Bush and people feel they must give. Washington is sure it can do anything it wants in the Middle East because the only place that will be hurt over here is New York and New York does not count.
Here are the choices for an Arab. Where are they going to die with a body bomb?
--Waco, Texas, or Rockefeller Center?
--Pascagoula, Miss., or the Port Authority bus terminal?
--Birmingham, Ala., or Times Square?
They crouch in the dirt in Cairo and some of them know New York street addresses. They don't even know these low IQ states exist. I still remember standing in the crowd on Broadway for the parade celebrating the great victory over Iraq in 1991. I remember thinking, "They'll do something back to us." That was hardly an original thought. What was it, two years later, just a couple of blocks over, on West Street, a huge bomb went off in the garage under the World Trade Center.
The Arabs who did it said they were nearly trapped in the garage with the bomb when a truck stalled in front of their getaway car. They said they were terrified of being killed. Then they got out and went over to the J&R music store, and went up to the third floor, the classical music department, and watched out the window. They wanted Tower One to topple into Two and kill tens of thousands. They were keenly disappointed when this did not happen.
And the Arabs who did the bombing were terrified of dying and then elated to be alive. Of course they would try again. This group was different. They were willing to die, and die they did to blow up the trade center.
Government agents and agencies costing billions of dollars said they didn't know it was coming. Why, then, is Bush nervous about talking about it, and seeks war in Iraq to distract? Did somebody tell him something and he, too, discounted it because it was New York, and, jeez, he didn't get a vote out of New York.

The White House On Iraq: We Don't Need No Stinkin' Proof!
By Arianna Huffington
At least that's the way the White House is now pitching the story.
In this latest rewrite of history, Osama has suddenly lost his beard and grown a mustache, morphing into the Butcher of Baghdad -- or one of the look-alike stand-ins Saddam has been using for public appearances since 1998.
"You can't distinguish between Al-Qaeda and Saddam when you talk about the war on terror," said President Bush in the Oval Office last week.
Really? He can't differentiate between a group of evil ultra-radical Islamic fundamentalists that carried out the Sept 11 attacks and an evil secular nationalist who, despite the frantic efforts of the Bush administration, has not been directly linked to 9/11? He'd better start making such distinctions -- and fast. When every expert who knows anything about the Mideast can distinguish between the two, is it too much to ask that a President who's ready to go to war look a bit more closely?
People under stress often regress to earlier stages of development. It appears that Bush is so intent on getting Saddam, so obsessively tightly gripped by a need to succeed where his war hero dad failed, so obsessively determined to lay the murderous 9/11 assault at Baghdad's door, that he's regressed to that level of childhood development where fantasy, reality and wish fulfillment are all mixed up. Except that this time, things like nuclear weapons and the safety of the world for the next few decades are involved.
Now, I'm no psychologist, but I believe there is a clinical term for this condition: going off the deep end.
How else to explain the president's bizarre response to a reporter's straightforward query last week about who poses a bigger threat to America, Saddam or Al-Qaeda?
"That's an interesting question," he replied. "I'm trying to think of something humorous to say but I can't when I think about Al-Qaeda and Saddam Hussein."
When did the president take over the "Tonight Show?" Why would the idea that he should make a joke about such a deadly serious subject even cross his mind? It would be like asking Danielle van Dam's parents about the trial of their daughter's murderer and having them apologize for not being ready with a humorous quip.
No, Mr. President, you needn't apologize -- your inability to treat serious subjects lightly is not one of your deficiencies. So rather than struggling to come up with a wan witticism, why don't you just answer the question? Especially since it appears by your actions that you've already come up with one.
Instead of bothering to give the least defense of his sudden fusion of Saddam and Osama, Bush launched into a fantasy-fueled diatribe: "The danger is, is that they work in concert. The danger is, is that Al-Qaeda becomes an extension of Saddam's madness and his hatred and his capacity to extend weapons of mass destruction around the world."
Bush's regressed condition is spreading like the West Nile virus throughout the West Wing and beyond.
Witness the symptomatic blurring of fact and fantasy exhibited by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. When asked at an Armed Services Committee hearing about what is now compelling us to "take precipitous actions" against Iraq, Rumsfeld barked: "What's different? What's different is 3,000 people were killed." Yeah, by Mohammed Atta & company -- not Saddam Hussein. By why quibble over details when there is a propaganda war to be won?
National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice continued the assault on reality when she vaguely yet ominously claimed: "There clearly are contacts between Al-Qaeda and Iraq that can be documented." Well, then why not document them? We've documented contacts between Al-Qaeda and our oil dealers in Saudi Arabia and Al-Qaeda and our new best friends in Pakistan. But I don't see any B-2s powering up for raids over Riyadh or Karachi.
As is the White House custom, Rice simply refused to back up her claims. So did Rumsfeld, who memorably rebuffed a reporter late last week by saying, "That happens to be a piece of intelligence that either we don't have or we don't want to talk about." In other words: Proof? We don't need no stinking proof! And just because I'm asking your sons and daughters to possibly sacrifice their lives for it doesn't mean you deserve to know whether it even exists.
It would be nice if we could just take them all at their word and let the bombs fall where they may. But Sen. Bob Graham, who, as chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee is privy to the inside scoop, says he's seen no evidence of any link between Al-Qaeda and Saddam Hussein.
So we're left with the fevered, infantile imaginings of the president and his pals. "We had dots before," said Anna Perez, Rice's spokeswoman. "Now we have a higher density of dots. Have we connected those dots? No."
Perhaps the president should put down his saber-rattle, pick up his crayons and connect them before drawing us into a bloody war.
