Bush summons PM for talks on Iraq Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will meet U.S. President George Bush at the White House on October 16. In a meeting to be dominated by the planned U.S. attack to oust Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, Sharon will be told the Americans want Israel to keep a low profile and stay out of the war. The Bush administration wants Israel to moderate its statements before the American assault and to avoid retaliating should Iraq attack it. American officials have already delivered messages along these lines to an Israeli security delegation that visited Washington late last week. Bush is likely to promise Sharon that the U.S. will do its utmost to prevent Iraq firing missiles at Israel and the Americans have proposed deploying Patriot missiles in Israel as a defensive measure. A senior Israeli official says Sharon is likely to agree to the Patriot proposal. "You can't refuse a proposal to set up a defense system," the source said. Hans Blix, the chief UN weapons inspector for Iraq, has announced that he accepts the U.S. position that there is no point in sending inspectors back to Iraq without a new and stronger UN Security Council resolution to define the inspectors' assignment. Speaking after meeting U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, Blix said he believes that there is a majority in the Security Council in favor of a new resolution on Iraq. However, in private he has expressed some reservations about some American demands that have been incorporated in the new draft resolution. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has also indicated that a new Security Council resolution should precede the resumption of the inspectors' work in Iraq. The Washington Post yesterday reported that the earliest feasible date for U.S. military action against Iraq would be January. The report said the Pentagon has started to build up forces in the Persian Gulf, but U.S. army sources said a surprise attack on Iraq is not an option and more forces will have to be brought to the Gulf before an attack becomes feasible.
