Libertarians make history by running candidates
in majority of House districts for second straight time

WASHINGTON, DC -- The Libertarian Party has just made history by
becoming the first third party in more than 80 years to contest a
majority of U.S. House seats for the second election cycle in a row.

The last third party to achieve that feat was the Socialists, who did
it in 1920.

"The Socialists had a profound impact on America as first the
Democrats, and then the Republicans, co-opted their ideas," said Ron
Crickenberger, Libertarian Party political director. "Obviously,
neither of the two major parties has any interest in co-opting our
small-government ideas, which is why we need to replace them."

At least 219 Libertarian candidates in 39 states have already qualified
to be on the ballot for the U.S. House in November, the party announced
on Tuesday. That marks only the second time in 82 years that a third
party has accomplished that feat for two election cycles in a row. The
party also contested a majority of seats in 2000, when it ran 256
candidates in 44 states.

By contrast, the Green Party is running 58 U.S. House candidates, the
Constitution Party is running 15, the Natural Law Party is running 11,
and the Reform Party has four. [All information provided by the
respective party websites].

The ability to contest a majority of U.S. House races is significant,
said Ballot Access News publisher and third-party expert Richard
Winger, because the last "minor" parties to accomplish that feat all
wound up electing people to Congress.

In the 20th Century, only the Progressive Party, the Prohibition Party,
and the Socialist Party were able to field candidates in more than half
the U.S. House districts - and all went on to win House seats.

The party may also have an impact on determining whether Democrats or
Republicans control the House, Crickenberger pointed out, because
Libertarian candidates are running in 17 of the 34 races that the DC
Political Report describes as "five-star" races, which are the most
exciting and competitive in the country.

"With a 13-seat difference between the Democrats and Republicans in the
House, the Libertarian Party could tip the balance of power by
affecting the outcome of just seven races," said Crickenberger. "This
should give the Republicans and Democrats something to worry about when
they vote for a more expensive and intrusive government."

Libertarian candidates for the U.S. House will be on the ballot in
every state except Arkansas, Rhode Island, Georgia, Ohio, Florida,
North Dakota, New Mexico, Minnesota, Maryland, West Virginia, and
Maine, said Crickenberger.

"Many of these Libertarians are the only challengers to an incumbent,
big-government politician," said Crickenberger. "Voters who don't like
the way Democrats are Republicans are behaving can literally kick them
right out of the House."
