Mom's violent death shocks her world Dawn Rae Nelson By Connie Cone Sexton and Senta Scarborough The Arizona Republic Oct. 17, 2002 Dawn Rae Nelson's violent death stands in contrast to the person described by family and friends. Nelson, 35, of Ahwatukee Foothills, was killed Friday by a Chandler police officer when she allegedly endangered the officer while trying to flee after attempting to pass a forged prescription at the drive through window of Walgreens drugstore at Dobson and Warner roads in Chandler. Chandler police are investigating the shooting by Officer Dan Lovelace, a six-year veteran. During a memorial service Monday, John "Colby" Nelson described how his wife's life revolved around her family. She filled her days with stroller walks with 13-month- old Kenneth and shopping trips with Constance, 15. She read stories to Aaron, 10, and made sure she kept the refrigerator well stocked with Popsicles and at least three kinds of ice cream. She and Colby, an America West Airlines pilot, loved times when he wasn't called to fly because they could just hang out together. "We were like the old retired couple driving around town," Colby said. "We'd drive real slow" not having much else to do, he said and laughed. The two celebrated their second wedding anniversary in May. "The happiest day of my life was meeting her six years ago," Colby said. The two had been living in Jacksonville, Fla. Neighbor Dhana Gober, 35, said Nelson had survived an abusive previous marriage, then a near fatal car accident this year. "She was finally on her feet, had a new home, a new baby, and her situation was going good for her," said Gober, adding that the fatal event shouldn't have happened. "People like Dawn don't get shot by police officers," she said. "No one can wrap your mind around that a 35-year-old mother of three gets shot over a piece of paper." Dawn's parents, John and Michele Smith, said their daughter was living a wonderful life. "She was so sweet and kind, a wonderful person," Michele said. She had had plenty of time to practice being a mother. She was 10 in 1978 when her sister, Shannon, was born. "She was a loving sister," Shannon Smith, 24, said. "She made us feel very special." Nelson never took her family and life for granted, Gober said. "Dawn was always thankful to be home because she had been a single mother," Gober said. "She was very proud of her daughter and how well she was doing with cheerleading." Gober described Nelson as caring and understanding, calm and someone who "never raised her voice."
